- Paul HPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania216 contributionsAn absolute mustEven with some rain I had a great time! The Tablelands hike was fascinating, the Western Brook Pond Tour had awesome scenery (and was well worth the 45 minute walk in), and the Berry Hill campground was clean and well maintained. This park is a must for anyone visiting Newfoundland.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten June 17, 2024
- HeatherNew York242 contributionsThree nights here gave us just a taste…My wife and I spent 3 nights here (2 in Rocky Harbour and 1 in Cow Head) and it left us longing for more! The drive itself is absolutely phenomenal and there’s so much to see and do! It was also wonderful to see how well taken care of (and clean) all the public areas are.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024
- rlmptlLloydminster, Canada1,272 contributionsbeautiful park which is a must seeThis park was spectacular one of our favorite national parks. When you book with Bon tours for the Western Brooke pond which is highly recommended you get one day towards park entry just show that to the person at the gate The drive was so beautiful through it stopping at many lovely places and we loved driving through the tablelands. We especially loved Bonne Bay liked this better than Norris, Norris point, Needles harbor, Trout River, Rocky harbor and Lobster cove. We took the scenic route 430 and 431 there is a great large store at deer creek like a huge grocery i would recommend loading up on stuff there for variety otherwise variety is lacking in the smaller grocery. The Jenniex house and Dr Henry Payne center was closed off season as were other things but no problem tons of scenery to capture your attention. We drove as far as Shallow bay but was very disappointed in the described most beautiful beaches in Canada it was completely covered with brown foul smelling seaweed. Maybe just that time of year but worth checking if that changes with seasonVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 26, 2024
- blair rMoncton, Canada39 contributionsTrout River Campground Gros Morne National ParkThe Trout River campground is lovely and secluded. Access is available to Trout River Pond, a beautiful lake (the trail is not really signed but is short - just look for it while at the campground). The Eastern Point Trail is nearby in the village of Trout River and brings you up high for a view of Trout River. At the Day Park, there is the trailhead to Trout River Pond Trail. We decided to do most of this trail by following the shoreline, although the trail itself is often through the forest.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 30, 2024

- Karen BFEdmonton, Canada702 contributionsHikes, cozy towns, history and boat rides!Stay long enough to take it all in. You can hike, kayak or canoe, take a boat tour, shop, dine on fresh seafood, visit historic sites. And the people are unique and charming. The Gros Morne Discovery Centre, located near Woody Point, is by far the better information centre. It has the expected gift shop and interpretive displays, but also a really engaging video, Indigenous exhibit and just more of everything. Hikes here range from 10-minute 250-metre paths to challenging three-day treks. Know you limits and walk what appeals to you. The Tablelands are cool, but you really don't have to go all the way to the end. It's the same red rock plateau all the way through. But it is an easy hike with no real incline, so if you want a walk, go for it. Wear the right shoes as the shale is sometimes crumbly.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten September 15, 2024
- John M3 contributionsOVER THE HUMPJanet and I hiked the Gros Mourne Mountain today. The weather up top was foggy, very light wind. The Summit dash up the rock fall was adventurous. Folks should take the advice written on the signage. We were up and back to the parking lot in a little over 5 hours, with a small amount of time discounted at the top, couldn’t see diddly.Great hike to judge your fitness and balance.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024
- Robert D5,375 contributionsAmazing placeGros Morne National Park was in the centre of the Rodinia supercontinent (before Pangea). Rocks from the earth's mantle have come to the surface here. This is the also the earth's oldest crust, over 500 million years old. I went for a guided walk on the Tablelands. The guide's presentation was fascinating. The orange rocks are Peridonite, igneous rocks that formed in the earth's mantle. The grey rocks are Serpentinite, metamorphic rocks. Pitcher plants are carnivorous. Insects fall into the pitcher-like flowers and can't escape. The Pitcher plant is the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten December 4, 2024

The Park has an abundance of unique features not to be missed.
Start at the Visitor Centre in Rocky Harbour where you will be greeted by a charming woman and her sons. They are knowledgeable and articulate in English and French.
The Discovery Center although a long detour off the highway is also a great stop and an educational treat. Have a good look and a chuckle at the collection of figurine scenes on display.
If you do nothing else take the Western Brook Pond boat tour and enjoy the easy walk in. It is an hour on a hard packed path with lots of benches for resting and panels for learning. Truly the highlight of our trip to Newfoundland.

The 6 km out and back trail to western brook pond is a worthwhile walk into the fiord type high rock face banks of the “pond”. Opportunity for great photos. Reserve the boat trip in advance. We didn’t take the boat, but it looked like a good thing.
The 6 km out and back coastal trail is spectacular. Start at the second entrance located at the campground next to site 21. There is parking by the trail. I loved the beauty of the walk along the ocean.
The tablelands trail is an easy 4 km out and back into moonscape rock formations and the towering table flat mountains above. Another very diverse geological region so close to very different landscape.
We stayed in a little cottage in Norris Point. It’s a very small village with few restaurants. The ferry goes across to Woody Point and is a short ride. We drove and it was an hour around, and a beautiful drive.
Rocky Harbour is bigger and has more restaurants. It looks like a better option to stay here.

We stayed and explored the park over three days; we could have stayed a week and still would have had more to explore. Great hikes, beautiful scenery, awesome sunsets. The park has it all. Lots of places to stay. On a par with Alberta's parks with the added benefit of the ocean here. A must see in Newfoundland.

Even if you are not a hiker driving through this park is absolutely breathtaking! We were here for 5 days and we could have easily stayed here a few weeks. So many trails that are so interesting and beautiful. The Discovery Centre was very informative in helping you learn more about what you are looking at. We also did the Western Brook Pond tour which was not only breathtaking but the tour guides added humour and live music giving you a kitchen party experience. Gros Morne Adventures tour also provided us an opportunity to learn about the indigenous people who once lived here along with an opportunity to make fire, cook bannock, moose meat and fish. The sunsets and food in Rocky Harbour was wonderful!

There is so much to see and do in Gros Morne. The scenery is breathtaking!
It is in my top 5 places I've ever camped. Highly recommend learning the history and hiking the Tablelands. The Gros Morne visitor centres are very informative, and had clean bathrooms.
Be very careful driving, we almost hit a bear when it darted out into the road in front of us.

You will need multiple days to see everything in this park - if you've never been before. Make sure you take the extra drive to the Discovery Centre and to the Tablelands. The geology of the area is especially awesome. If it is your first time, make sure you take the Western Brook Pond Tour!!!!

It is an understatement to say that this national park is the major reason to visit Newfoundland. It is located on the opposite of the island from St. John's. So it requires a little bit of effort to get there...but well worth it.
My wife and I took the Western Brooke Pond boat excursion. It is not to be missed.

An absolute must see in Newfoundland. Every turn is a new and exciting view. The variety is incredible. From the fantasist trek into Western Brook Pond (sure sorry the boat tour was not running), to the wild landscape of the Tablelands. A never-before-seen experience. Almost like walking on the moon.

Camping with a R V in Gros Morne in July. Think we may need to reserve
Written February 1, 2025
Hi, we are a very active family (55, 46, 14, 12) and will be tent camping this coming Aug (2024) . We have 6-7 nights available. Does anyone have campsite recommendations? The walk in ones at Lomond look beautiful, if not very private. Would we be better suited to split up the nights? Say 3 nights at Lomond or Trout River , and 4 at Shallow Bay? Or should we just stay put for the week? Thanks in advance! It’s always a bit tricky planning visits to places I’ve never been.

We're two active 70+ adults. Are there hikes that would be considered a medium difficulty. Walking for a few hours is not a problem but climbing for two hours might be:)
Written August 1, 2022
There are many moderate hikes in the park. Park services should provide a map to guide you.

Hello, I have a few questions regarding a trip to Gros Morne. Hoping someone can help me out. My cousin and I are sadly only going to be able to have one full day at Gros Morne. Flights didn’t work out into Deer Lake so we are flying into St. John’s at about 11am and then driving out to Deer Lake that day.
Wondering if it worth staying in Deer Lake or at Rocky Harbour. Prob arrive at like 8pm knowing how we will stop along the way. We would stay the night and then next day have the full day at Gros Morne National Park. We wanna do the following trails. Western Brook Pond (boat if possible), Costal Trail, see Lobster Cove, Tablelands and then Lookout. We are prepared to be exhausted and weak legs lol. Then we are getting up next day and heading to Twillingate.
So wondering if those trails are possible to do all in one day? Wondering if it is better to stay at Deer Lake or Rocky Harbour? Also where do you get the National Park Pass for a day… is their an office to get them or do you have to get them online and print it off? Again our time frame is very short. We thought since we can go to Gros Morne we would try put it into an epic day since we wanna see so much on Newfoundland. Thank you!!

Hi :) Would you recommend a car to explore GMNP? Or is it possible to stay in Rocky Harbour or else and take on the trails from there walking? I‘ll be traveling alone. I‘ll propably be flying from Toronto (5 days stay) to St. John‘s (2-3days here), take the Bus to Deer Lake, stay in and around GMNP (3-5days) and then take the shuttle to St. Anthony, where I’ll be working for 8 weeks. Any overall suggestions for this Trip and the area?
Mila

Just a reminder. The town of St. Anthony is on the northern tip of NL. It is not St. Anthony’s.

I was just wondering if their is a ferry that goes across from trout lake to rocky harbour as we are taking the bone bay boat tour. We would rather not drive all around if we don’t have to. If there is wat is it called hours it runs and cost
Written April 17, 2019
The only ferry is a passenger ferry from Bonne Bay to Norris Point.
Google Norris Point ferry for more information.

Are there any boat tours which go through the fiords which require little walking to get to the boat?
Written October 30, 2018
Sorry for the delay. Yes there is boat tours that go through the fiords, the company has a shuttle to get to the boat from the road for people who cannot make it.
Written November 16, 2018
Thank you everyone for answering my question. There is no way my husband can walk 45 mins. to get to the Bonne Bay Tour book to see Western Brook Pond, although I have already booked it - not knowing that was the case. In the 2.5 days we'll be in the area, staying in Rocky Harbor, our time will be spent driving around. Guess I need to know what to see driving to maximize our experience. Thanks for your info.

Go online/write ahead to Parks Canada, To Do Canada, Lonely Planet etc. and read about all there is to see and do in the park. There are short walks, and historical markers/sites that are located throughout. Picnic spots, short treks to waterfalls and scenic overlooks everywhere.
Written March 6, 2018
We'll have 2.5 days and probably VERY little walking. Driving mainly. Want to see most of the park and maybe do a couple of hours boat trip. Any suggestions to optimize our 2.5 days there? Thanks.
Written March 1, 2018
Stay in or around Rocky harbour and you'll be able to drive to everything...boat trip is a 45 minute home to the boat launch...make reservations for western brook pond or you may walk all the way in and have to wait for a fee hours for the next your...its a fairly flat easy walk...lots to see from the car.. many places to pull over and enjoy the spectacular views
