We booked an evening trip with our Grandsons (8 and 13) and when we arrived Kris said he was aware of a pod of Orcas in the area and were taking us to see if we could locate them. We were given survival suits and after a ride of 20 minutes or more, we spotted them. Along the way, we found ourselves in the midst of thousands of Shearwaters which are low flying birds who actually were running on the water before they took flight and then flew along by us.
That in itself was an amazing experience!!
Kris stayed with the Killer Whales over 2 hours and we experienced a lifetime thrill as the whales came around us, going back and forth under our boat, sometimes coming up close to the sides. They were a Pod of 8 and Kris told us they were a family unit. It was just amazing watching them in their natural environment, and as it became close to the time to start back, Kris asked if we would like to stay out a little longer. We said good by to the Orcas and on the way back, stopped to spend some time with a group of Humpbacks who provided lots of entertainment as well .Kris's knowledge and love for whales ensured we had an evening of a lifetime and we would highly recommend this trip to anyone of all ages. Thank you very much.

Had an amazing time on the water with Sea of Whales Adventures! I felt safe during the whole trip despite being nervous initially as it was my first ever zodiac tour. During my trip I seen two humpbacks which were playful, eagles, seals and a variety of sea birds. The icing on the cake was seeing a minke whale breach more than 10 times! Our tour guide, Chris, was very knowledgable and asked us what we were hoping to get out of the tour and tailored it to what we were hoping to see. I would highly recommend doing a tour with Sea of Whales if you are in the area. I will definitely return when I am back in the future! Thank you so much for the best whale watching tour I’ve ever been on!

Having gone out whale watching with this company on a previous trip to Nfld, when we were fortunate enough to see many whales, my friend and I decided to go with the same company this time around. Kris is very knowledgeable about all species of whales that make Trinity Bay their summer habitat. He is also confident navigating these waters in a zodiac. Although we only saw one minke whale this trip, Kris made every effort to seek them out in multiple areas, using a hydrophone, and a trained eye. We were confident that if they were out there, Kris would find them. Two days before, they spotted 5 humpbacks, but unfortunately they had left the area by time we got there. Though disappointed not to see whales, Kris’s efforts to take us into sea caves, and to ensure we saw a very rare Stellar Sea eagle, a puffin colony, and a lone caribou on an island far out in Trinity Bay, was truly appreciated. It was a gorgeous day to be out on the Atlantic in a zodiac, whales or not! Thank you Kris! We highly recommend going whale watching with this company, if you are anywhere around Trinity, Port Rexton, or Bonavista.

Booked an afternoon tour with Kris to hopefully see whales and other wildlife. He didn’t disappoint!! Day before he changed our departure location to address weather conditions and we were rewarded with calm waters and great conditions for the trip. Located an iceberg and demonstrated his deep knowledge of both the geography and wildlife we encountered including various seabirds and eagles. He was determined to find a whale and we eventually did, following it along the coast as it searched for food. We stayed out on the water for an additional hour beyond our tour time. If not for one person’s dinner date, we would have stayed out longer!! The tour was a real highlight of our trip to Newfoundland and would highly recommend using Kris at Sea of Whales!!!!!

We had an early (9am) tour with Sea of Whales on 7-22-21and the experience was incredible! Chris is very knowledgeable and friendly and really makes an effort to get to know his guests. We encountered a very curious humpback and spent loads of time with him. It was incredible to just be alongside such a majestic animal.
Overall a great tour and we can't wait to book with Sea of Whales again when we are back in the area.

This was our 2nd year in a row doing a zodiac tour with Kris and Shawna and we will certainly be back for more!! It was a little windy on the day we went but Kris was a great skipper and did his best to keep everyone happy on the boat. His knowledge of whales and all the other animals in the area was phenomenal and he really makes everyone feel comfortable on the boat. It didn't take long for Kris to put us on to some very active whales and then the breaching started. We got to see 37 breaches from one whale (some of them were so close to the boat that we got splashed a little). We also seen 8 other humbacks, 1 fin whale, 2 minke whales, bald eagles, puffins, gannets, guillemots, and murres. We were all soaked to the bone from whale and wave splashes but Kris had a secret stash of refreshing watermelon that helped us to forget about that. Back on shore we were met by Shawna who was eager to hear of our adventures and help us out of our suits. From start to finish all of their staff were very professional and they deliver on their promise of great adventures each and every time!! Can't wait to come back and do it all again next season!!

Kris was amazing. We asked last minute on a rainy day to take us an an adventure he made it happen. We have a lovely trip seeing the rocks and iceberg on the way out. We didn’t see any whales in the way out, but then near the end when it was for us to come back Kris had spotted a whale blow! He quickly got us over, the whale dived deep and we got to see its tail go up in the air. We were so excited and ready to go back and then Kris spotted another one and the same thing, we got to see it up close and dived deep again (seeing the tail again). It was amazing and breath taking! He went over the amount of time we paid for because he really wanted us to see the whales. The best part is that Kris is so passionate about sharing the amazing parts of NL with you and his energy is contagious. I highly recommend booking with Sea of Whales Adventures !!

Kris and Shauna run a family owned business with passion and amazing customer service. He has owned and operated Sea of Whales since he was 17 and as an entrepreneur (like me) he understands customers always come 1st. I have been on a whale watch in Hawaii, BC Canada and now Newfoundland- this was the best!! Ever single person on the boat was engaged in the experience by Kris; it was so much fun. He even stayed out an extra 30 minutes to make us happy 😃

Going on this excursion with Chris was like going with a family member excited to show you what they love about their home. He wanted us to see whales and we did! Chris is very in tuned with what activity is happening in the area and where/how to find it. 8 sperm whales, pod of pilot whales and a blue fin tuna was more than we had hoped for. Leary on who to go with at first I am so glad I listened to the locals who suggested Sea of Whales and would recommend them to anyone now in a heart beat. Happy adventures!

The weather was not the best. We saw 1 Humpback, birds nesting in the cliffs and a basking shark before visibility reduced to less than 10m. Kris shut down the motors and we listened for them surfacing, headed towards the sound, shutdown and listened again. We found "mother and calf". Had to start the process again when they dove to feed. Continued this hide and seek for over an hour each time finding another humpback. Wonderful experience with a couple of multiple repeat customers in the 12 person crew. Wished we had more time in our Newfoundland visit to do this excursion again.

I am planning to have a wale watch in Trinity in August. The zodiac sets off at 9am, 1pm and 5pm. Which time is the best for whale and view watch?
Thanks,
Terence

There’s really no better time of day for seeing whales. They are equally active at all times of the day. The morning and evening trips sometimes offer calmer sea conditions. See you soon!

Do you go out into ocean or stay in more protected bay?
Written July 7, 2018
The whales are feeding on fish that lay their eggs on the beaches so we are never very far from shore.
Written July 7, 2018
Does the tour go out if winds are 15-20mph?
Written July 7, 2018
We are in a unique position here where we can move our boat around the peninsula to wherever calmer water is. We do cancel the trip when winds are too high to safely operate. Yes, we would still be operating in winds of 20mph.

We're planning on booking a tour for next week. Is there a "best" time of day to see the whales? 9am, 1pm or 5pm tours?
Written July 12, 2017
There's really no better time of day for seeing whales as they are active all the time. Morning and evening trips sometimes offer calmer sea conditions. The best time is really whatever works in your schedule.
