So great - felt special to enjoy Cape Breton culture. This Play House is based on the Globe Theatre in London. The atmosphere in this small play House is intimate & comfortable to allow a real appreciation of the music - which was so fun.

Louisbourg is not the cultural capitol of Nova Scotia, but it offers a diverting evening of music and comedy at this unusual theatre. It also provides an opportunity to make contact with local people who seem to provide a large proportion of the clientele. The person running the box office is most affable, and at the interval, the provider of tea and oatcakes is very welcoming.
Do not expect slick sophisticated entertainment. The comedy can be little predictable and corny, but the music is as good as this very talented corner of the world can provide.
Shed a few inhibitions, but not too many, and enjoy the show.

We saw Lyrics and Laughter and were in awe of the amazing talent of all 5 of the musicians. The theatre itself is very quaint and every seat offers great site lines of the stage.

It depends, of course, on what's playing. We had a pleasant evening at the Playhouse, seeing Cape Breton Stomp (some music and some comedy). It was a two-minute walk from the Louisbourg Harbor Inn and a sweet, small venue.

The back story of the Louisbourg Playhouse is that Disney was filming a movie at the Fortress and needed a Shakespearean Globe Theatre as a set. Once the movie was completed they donated it. It was dissembled into 4 sections and was towed to town on a barge. The people of town outfitted it with a roof, proper seating (no groundlings!) and proper light and sound.

We went to see Jennifer Roland perform. She is a Cape Breton Celtic Fiddler who has achieved international acclaim. She apologized to the audience for “being rusty” as she has been away from the stage to complete a 4 year program to become a Registered Nurse (something she said that has been on her Bucket List.) Her playing was not rusty at all though she was quite winded and had to catch her breath after the first few jigs : )

While visiting in Louisbourg to tour the Fortress we discovered this little gem of a theatre. We went to two different performances that showcased the Celtic music tradition of Cape Breton Island. All the performers had roots in Cape Breton and treated us to a fine sampling of fiddle, piano, guitar and vocals. The female violinist on the second night, Kimberly Fraser is a classically trained fiddler and pianist so we were amazed to stumble onto performances of that quality in this beautiful little theatre on a weeknight in September. We thought we had missed out on the festival season by travelling so late but this was the real deal without the crowds.
Not to be overlooked is what a beautiful venue this theatre is for musical performances. It’s small and intimate with good acoustics. I would make this a destination just to listen to whatever their offering of Celtic music might be. I highly recommend taking in any of the performances at the Louisbourg Playhouse.

Nice small venue for a show. The night we were there, "Lyrics and Laughter" was performing. They were so much fun to watch - what a great show! Their fiddle player was amazing and a good comedian too. They served hot tea and oat cakes at intermission which was a nice little local treat. Never seen that done in the US! I highly recommend this show if you are in the area when they are on stage. Can't say enough good things about Lyrics and Laughter. Very entertaining group!

We attended the Cape Breton Stomp on July 23, 2018. We had a wonderful time. The skits were hilarious, and the music was moving. I was especially struck by the musicians' deep sense of local pride. I loved hearing their songs about Main-a-Dieu, Hopkins' Wharf, and other local places. I feel like I got to know Louisbourg better by listening to the concert. Thank you.

We went twice to this theatre that Disney built for a movie set then donated to the town. The first show was mediocre pop folk music and the second show was WORLD CLASS fiddling by Jennifer Roland. If one or more of Cape Breton's talented musicians are playing then be sure to go!

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the Louisbourg Playhouse - it was one of our highlights from our Canada 150 trip. After a fine dinner at the Lobster Kettle, we went to the theatre to enjoy a night of celtic music and comedy called "Cape Breton and a Funeral". We were laughing smiling and clapping through out the performance and enjoyed tea and oatcakes on the balcony of this lovely theatre during intermission. A mother of one of the entertainers was invited to sing impromptu and did a great job. You Nova Scotians are awesome people! What a great place that we highly recommend!
