We had spent the week in Lunenburg, touring the South Coast and while walking along the Lunenburg wharf, we commented that it would be fun to go on a boat ride -- not a major boat, nothing too touristy, etc. We decided to avoid the more trendy Lunenburg harbor and try nearby Mahone Bay. When we got back home from shopping, we googled the possibility and chose the first one in the search results. We called and there was room on the 2:00 cruise.
We boarded the "Risky Business" and waited with the boat captain Chris for the other three passengers who had called and made a reservation with him that morning. They never showed up. Chris, whose real occupation is as a lobsterman, does these boat tours in his off-season. He also is available for charters and told us about transporting party guests to a party on one of the privately owned islands. We saw a mussel farm, looked for seals, saw ospreys and herons and saw current and former industrial buildings, ordinary cabins and homes and million dollar mansions. We had free reign of the boat, moving about at will, shooting pictures and asking Chris questions. Our own private captain! It was a great way to spend a couple of hours; how lucky were we that the other people didn't come! We thanked him for going out just with the two of us and he said he didn't care how many people he had, he just loved being out on the water.

We did a day tour on Risky Business with Zchris Banfield as our Skipper. This is the 3rd time I have taken my company on this tour. Everyone loves it. Chris is very knowledgable regarding the local islands, wild life and the people in the area.
I would recommend this tour to everyone, from near and far!

As others have already said, Chris's boat tour is the best! Very enjoyable and informative. We saw loons, terns, a seal, osprey, a bald eagle, mussel-growing operation, etc. Only disappointment was not seeing any porpoise, but hardly something our tour guide had any control over. If you hope to see puffins, go for the 4-hour tour.

Exploring the South Shore of Nova Scotia on a gray and dismal day, reading TripAdvisor for what to do, came across reviews for Captain Chris's tour, phoned, and there we were, booked for the afternoon. Coming onto the boat, in a drizzle, we were his only passengers. We thoroughly enjoyed the nearly 2 hour tour of Mahone Bay, and all the stories and history he shared. We saw seals and harbor porpoises and osprey and two bald eagle fledglings perched on the edge of their nests, and mussel farms and wooden boat building sites... It was a great way to spend an afternoon and Chris was thoroughly engaging. (Chris -- enjoy the turquoise "Swell" bottle I left on the boat by mistake. Wash it and use it: it will keep drinks cold for 8+hours!)

We drove into the lovely town of Mahone Bay and I had read earlier about Captain Chris and the Risky Business boat tour. I heard so many good thing and I fully intended on booking a little tour and completely forgot while home in Toronto. I thought I'd give Captain Chris a call to see if there was even the slightest chance I could book a tour. There wasn't a tour until the evening however he graciously met up with us in approx 10 minutes and provided us with a very fun and informative tour. We saw many interesting sights along the way and he made sure we saw as much as we could. We laughed and learned a great deal of the area. Captain Chris is so accommodating and wants to make sure that his guests leave with a memorable experience. Thank you for being so flexible! Wes and I had a great time!!

My first sightseeing boat tour was better than I expected. I had a goal to take a photo of my first Puffin. When I did see one for the first time, it was like Christmas morning and you open up the gift, you always want! It was exhilarating. B^)
Capt. Chris is very friendly and enthusiastic. You will love him.

Chris gave us an amazing tour of Mahone Bay and Oak Island! His local knowledge was very impressive! Professional and entertaining - I highly recommend this outing for your group. My niece and and I went to South shore boat tours because I had read so many good reviews. Chris is great for telling you the history of the area. We would definitely do this again. You won't see sunsets like this anywhere else. Thanks again for a great tour of Mahon Bay!

We saw seals, osprey, bald eagles, and some other birds. We enjoyed the tour and the captain gave us the stories behind the different islands. It was a good experience and very relaxing.

Extremely informative and friendly Captain Chris really knows the waters, geography, history and economy of the Mahone Bay area.We learned and saw a lot, such as:
. a close-up view of mussels growing in the sea via a small commercial operation and the negative impact of a sea worm newly invading the area due to the warming ocean
. how locals, through organizations such as the Mahone Islands Conservation Authority , are successfully acquiring islands to keep them unspoiled and in the public domain
. colourful history such as the murderous raid by Maliseet natives on Covey's Island in the
mid-1700s.
Smelly cigarettes smoked by the second mate on our trip were a minor drawback even in the open air. I expect Chris would oblige if you asked for no smoking on your trip.
