About
The purpose of the Massey Area Museum is to collect, preserve, research, and exhibit these objects which will serve to illustrate the settlement and development of the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers and Sagamok Anishnawbek, up to 1968, the year the museum was founded. We recognize that understanding our local heritage is necessary to gain a better appreciation of community, province, and nation. The Museum collects artifacts and documents that depict the area’s past in terms of the earliest native settlement, early exploration, and first white settlement, the part played by natural resources in our community (lumber, minerals, waterways), agriculture, education, religion, cultural achievement, manufacturing, trade and transportation, business and municipal political development. The Museum provides for the preservation of such material as well as it possibly can, and for its availability to all who wish to see it.

We stumbled upon this museum in Massey Ontario right on highway 17 when we on our way to the Chutes Provincial Park. It looks small from the outside but is packed with all kinds of interesting things in a total of 16 (not big) rooms. Both the ladies who were there were very knowledgeable and helpful. They have the rooms set up like a store, a school room, a parlour (with a gorgeous set of very old dishes), a logging room, a bedroom, a First Nations room, a railway waiting room and more and downstairs there is a neat farming display. A small gift ship and tourist information is also on site. Take the time to drop in and visit this very interesting glimpse of the past. It's well worth it.

Hello Cindy! We are very pleased that our little museum prompted a stop on your motorcycle trip westward. Covid has impacted our museum like it has so many and we are sorry that our gift shop was not open when you visited. We hope to be in full operation in the next season or when pandemic restrictions have been lifted. We hope to see you again soon!

We spent a couple of hours learning about local history, walking through the different themed rooms and enjoying their wonderful artifacts. Great way to get a feel for life i. Such a remote place in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Massey Area Museum is a great way to spend an afternoon. There is a ton of information and interesting artifacts from the town and surrounding areas. Carolyn gave us a tour and was full of fun facts and history about Massey. They even have a nice gift shop with local artisan pieces and history books. We will be returning in the future and recommend a visit to anyone passing by.
