There surprisingly isn't a whole lot of hiking close to Parry Sound, so this trail being 20 minutes out of town is great for a quick 1-2 hour in and out hike.

There a few good spots with small climbs, some deer trail and droppings along the way, lots of little bridges and spring and wet falls will be mucky in there.

*Parking is essentially immediately left after turning on to Balsam from Center*

A nice day hike near McKellar. A good variety of terrain and a good length for a day trip (1.5hrs about).

Only complaint was that the trail is not well marked. There are some spots is was difficult to know where to go next. It could use some paint marks or signs for when trail is not clear.

It should be noted the address on Trip Advisor for Balsam Rd is not correct. Following the GPS to this location, we drove wayyyyy past the trail head. Try the location in the screenshot instead! Parking lot is hidden by trees.

An Autumn Hike along McKellar Township's Balsam Trail was an Excellent Day activity.
The trail is rugged in spots, crosses a creek, enters into meadow lands and exposes the ghostly remains of - long abandoned Farmer's utility vehicles.
You also cross a meadow and hike up along farm land, eventually meeting up with Hwy 124, where you can have someone pick you up, or opt to turnaround and return along the route and back to the parking lot off Balsam Road.

We stayed at nearby Cabin on Manitou and the entire Family Autumn Vacation was something we will cherish forever.

As you drive out of the tiny town of McKellar along Centre Road and turn onto Balsam Road you notice a relatively new set of stairs leading into the woods. This is the trail head for the new Balsam Trail, a 3 km trail (6 km round trip). When a group of friends suggested a Thanksgiving Weekend hike along the trail I was happy to get outside for the fresh air but had very low expectations for the value of the hiking experience. What a pleasant surprise! The trail is nicely laid out and covers a wide variety of terrain, vegetation and vistas. It's not a "walk in the park" with some climbing but anyone with average stamina and mobility will enjoy this walk. Well done McKellar!
