By Chadsey's Cairns winery is located on a 200-year-old farm settled by James and Maria Chadsey in 1809. Fruit has been grown on the property from its earliest days, apples, later cherries and raspberries and now grapes. Entering the property you park beside the pioneer cemetery and walk back in time to the Apple House (circa 1855) Tasting Room and wine store located behind four magnificent barns that overlook Lake Ontario.Mature maples and lilacs border the Apple House vineyard and you can enjoy the bucolic splendour sampling your wine on the deck nestled into the vineyard.Eight different vinifera wines are grown here. Some of the first planted in the County, and most of them representing the first commercial offerings of fine wines from PEC in 2002 and 2003.You can rent the 5 bedroom farmhouse beside the winery any time of the year and use it as your base to explore "the County". Full descriptions of the hundred-year-old house, with rates and occupancy calendars can be accessed through the By Chadsey's Cairns facebook page.No matter the time of year there are reasons to visit the location, for Maple in the County, Countylicious, Terroir, TASTE, the Jazz Festival, Studio Touring, Pumpkinfest, Wassail or chilling in the Christmas holidays and winter solstice. Picking parties at By Chadsey's Cairns are a great way to spend an October Saturday.Vida and Richard also host concerts in the barn for their customers and friends, barn dances, readings etc.

The location is beautiful. You can see the water from the road. The wine is also spectacular. Try the Chenin Blanc! You can taste the saltiness from the lake. I crave it whenever I'm in Wellington. Also, the bubbly Pinot Noir was different in an awesome way.

For a number of years, By Chadsey's has been one of our favourite wineries in the County -- interesting historical setting, beautiful property, welcoming owners and other staff, and a variety of tasty wines. But last Saturday, our experience was special. We attended one of the Classical-in-the-Clos concerts. Concert goers were invited to partake in a meal on the lawn.... More

The grounds are beautiful and make for a worthwhile visit. My kids played ping pong in the barn, while I tasted some wines, so we had more time than usual to enjoy the experience. I agree with others that the tasting bar is small, but the dilapidated homestead and graveyard added depth/gravitas and made my visit feel more grounded in... More

Very scenic.... good wine.... good information with the wine tasting. The view from the barn of the lake is fabulous. History buffs will find the cemetery interesting to check out. Easy to find

Feels like going to a friend's farm/orchard. Unlike the ratings, can't say it's number one, but top five for sure. Grounds make for a leisurely visit. Artwork in the tasting room is a nice touch, but the tasting bar is somewhat small. By Ontario wine standards, very palatable wines.

From the first sip, we were blown away by the mastery of the wine maker. Going from French-style Chenin, smoothly rounded Chardonnay and vivid Riesling, our journey at chadsey's vineyard was magical. They even added original piece of art throughout the room and suggested a few other spots to try around. These people really care about each other in the... More

I particularly liked the red sparking wine and chenin blanc. Lovely setting. The barn looks like a great place for parties. Very knowledgable staff. A good stop!

I visited By Chadsey's Cairns a week-ago to deepen my personal knowledge of local wineries. I work for one of them. It was late in the day and I had a lovely long conversation with Vita-one of the co-owners, learning a lot about the early years of the County. The tasting room is small--ill-suited to large groups. Their wines are... More

Have been on a number of occasions and always had great wines and great service. Just had a bottle of their Darkling and have to say I was hugely impressed. This is one winery that you should not miss when visiting the County! Richard you really have a winner!
