Worth the visit

The locals are really proud the fishing heritage it doesn't take much to get them going on the topic. The receptionist/ curator knew her history very well, it was a nice visit.

What a super collaborative of information and displays! We are not from Eastern Canada, and found that Basin Head Fisheries Museum was a wealth of information regarding historical methods, fishing gears, kinds of fish, and historical events. Surely not to be missed if you love to find out about the fish, the fishermen in area you are visiting

We stopped here during a road trip around the island. It is a small museum with several floors of displays. The focus is on the wildlife and fishing industry of the area. Well done displays that would keep kids interested as well as educating adults. The $5 entry is very reasonable!

While the family was changing, I decided to walk in and check out the museum. The A-frame sign said FREE, but donations welcome... A friendly woman greeted me and answered my questions about some of the wildlife displayed near the entrance... As I proceeded, she said the entry fee was $5??? Since I was headed to the beach and water,... More

This is a very nice museum. There are lots of interesting artifacts and exhibits that explain the PEI fishing industry. We recommend that you accept the offer of a free tour guide as we did. When we finished the museum tour we went to the beach which is just outside the door. Great place to visit.

There are many artifacts here. Some of the displays are a little cheesy but a good effort. I would like more interpretive information to explain what the pieces are and how they were used, stories of fishing history, triumphs, tragedies, evolution of laws and regulations and maybe some interactive displays. The new museum manager is a wealth of information and... More

Learn more about the fishing industry on PEI. Lots of artifacts, such as fishing floats, different kinds of fishing craft, displays showing different kinds of fish, an old lighhouse lens, seashells, dioramas, whale bones, description of the tuna canning industry.

We were rather disappointed in the lack of info at this museum. It was mostly displays without much description or history at all. The (many) teen girls manning the office were not engaging at all - they were talking amongst themselves - who knows if they were knowledgeable or not as they weren't interested in sharing any they might have... We come from a coastal fishing town so we knew we'd see a lot about which we knew, but we didn't expect to see so much about what we didn't. We really learned quite a lot in this wonderfully friendly place, with doyennes who were informed and really welcoming. There are countless, handmade, elaborate dioramas, which were meticulously made, really... More
