The Centro Historico of Tlaxcala is one of the most compact in the country; a pleasant walk through a historic centre of great significance. Even if you're not "into" Mexican history, the importance of the city and state as a staging point for Cortez etc., you'll enjoy a walk through this pleasant downtown, with one of the country's oldest cathedrals and bullfighting rings, the amazing murals in the municipal building and some very good restaurants. My wife and I were there last August on a day trip. We hired local resident Bob Cox as a guide and I'd highly recommending doing so, especially if you are a Canadian (us), American or European and only somewhat knowledgeable about the history of the state. But even Mexicans, many of whom might not know the role the city and state played in Mexico's history, would benefit from Bob's rich knowledge of the area.

There was a lot more traffic since my last visit and there were ongoing roadworks on several streets that made it worse. This is one of the less visited colonial capitals by foreigners and it is certainly worth a day or two, especially considering its importance in the story of the conquest. To get away from the hustle and bustle walk up the cobbled hill to the cathedral, possibly the oldest church in the country, and which has a beautiful mudéjar style ceiling and the pulpit from which the first sermon in the New World was supposedly preached.

If you're in the area, make sure to spend an afternoon wandering the beautiful plazas and colourful streets of Tlaxcala's historical centre. Tlaxcala is a small, tranquil and clean town, no traffic, no hustle bustle. People are friendly and helpful. There is a weekend market on the Xicohtencatl Plaza next to the central plaza with local artisanal items from cocoa and mole to woollen goods.

I marvel at the beauty of old building such as those in this Mexican city. I see few to no old buildings in my hometown of Charlotte thus I loved this opportunity to view the old structures and found many restaurants with lots of charm. The churches and museums, as well at the state government building were also impressive.

Shaded zocalo and separate park, restaurants, flowers, and steeped in history . Up a path to the Cathedral great views and also a bullring! Museums, churches (the man paroquia one closed due to Sept 17 earthquake). Archaeological zones and Basilica de Ocotlan nearby - really nice place to stop and relax.

There are restaurants everywhere but the true cuisine can only be found from the street and park vendors. Fresh tamales...mmmmm. Quesadillas with extreme flavors. Tlaxacala retains more of the Spanish cooking than any other state in Mexico. The place is clean, safe, family orientated, and easy on the pocket book.
Do not leave without seeing the murals in the city building. Breathtaking artistry

The Legislative Palace of Tlaxcala is located in the Historic Center at the end of Juarez Park. It was once the trolley bus station where Mules pulled trolleys on tracks for a distance of six or seven miles.
The building has a stain glass ceiling and a Mural containing the Heraldic Shields of the States 60 Municipalities. No Admission fee, just ask permission from the guard at the front gate. Sometimes they have painting and historic exhibits.
