I am probably jaded, since I have been coming to this area since the 80s. It was pure magic then. But things have changed. Akumal Bay is a great snorkeling spot, with the reef that's within swimming distance and protecting the inner bay so it is always fairly...More

We were quite cautious having read so many reviews saying it was best to book a tour but we just jumped on a Collectivo from Playa Del Carmen and had absolutely no problems! It may be that we turned up fairly late in the day...More

We visited Akumal beach using a "collectivo" from our hotel. It cost us 2 dollars and brought our own snorkel stuff. Don't be fooled into thinking you need a life jacket and guide. You can do this yourself if you can swim and have patience....More

This is my 3rd visit to Akumal since 1989 and can say with all honesty that it is still worth it. I'm a diver and really do enjoy snorkelling. Come early in the morning before the tours or stay late in the afternoon and avoid...More

We had already booked this tour through our hotel upon arrival, before reading reviews about getting your own guide and saving money. But for me I’m probably just as happy here. The road into the place was crowded with cars and hawkers (“guides”) and that’s...More

We went snorkeling for a day excursion to this protected snorkeling area in Akumal on January 16,2018. The cost was $60 USD per person which includes a guided tour guide (registered). He spoke no English so asking any questions after the 35 minutes was impossible....More

We arrived at Akumal to see some turtles off the beach. You come across the first lot of hustlers as you enter and unless you have done your homework you don't get much opportunity to choose who to run with. They provide snorkels and mask...More

We've been to Akumal when it was clearer and less windy. The week we were recently there was fairly overcast.

We went here with a tour group. It was pretty crowded but the snorkeling was awesome. We saw 4 turtles, string ray and lots of fish. Would definetly recommend.

Hi. You can go to Akumal bay without paying. You can swim in some areas without paying, but if you want to go to restricted areas in sea and swim with turtles you have to pay for guide. I heard that a bit further from this... More

If you want to swim with the turtles you must have a tour guide. There is a ranger on a kayak patrolling the area and he will ask you to leave if you do not have a guide. The advantage of the guide is they have all the... More
