Myself and my partner got a taxi from playa here and were immediately bombarded by tourist guides trying to sell us tours. They try to to convince you that you are not allowed to swim without a guide but this is not true. Continue walking...More

Akumal beach is beautiful loads of hotels along the beach front. The whole beach and sea is public anyone can swim there or sit on the beach free. You just need to stay in front of the hotel flags on the beach. We walked there...More

We expected much more from this trip. Snorkelling overall in Akumal seemed pretty average, a couple of turtles from a distance make it to 3 star rating, but if you have been snorkelling in good places before, the trip would not live up to expectations.

Have Been coming here for 30 years. Not as great as it was when no one knew about , but still one of the best reefs to swim on. It won't last forever so get it while it is still there. I have seen rays,...More

The snorkeling at Secrets Akumal is fantastic. In fact it is almost too fantastic as you are literally right over the turtles as they much on sea grass. There are posted rules about leaving them alone, but I can't imagine 20 tourists floating above them...More

Highly recommend! We paid through Thompson but I'm sure you will get it cheaper from online etc. You are not allowed to use sun cream as it gets into the water and can be dangerous to the environment which I was impressed that they are...More

I took a cab from my Cancun hotel to Akumal. Its an hour and a half ride. I read that you can take a bus/collectivo and get here very cheaply but since I am an inexperienced international traveler, I was apprehensive. I did notice many...More

We were originally going to swim with whale sharks, although we found it to be too expensive and there was a lot of travel time involved. Instead, we visited Akumal beach. Prices are reasonable, and all the equipment is provided. You get a guide who...More

We have visited Akumal some years ago and it was quiet and you could see the turtles easily. You can still see them as we did today but you need to be a bit on your guard because there are scammers everywhere. Here's a quick...More

Hi yes it is the same Akumal and turtle bay. I don't think Tulum is a bay, just a nice place to visit some Mayan ruins by the water and beautiful beaches. It is a shame Akumal is close for a month. If you stay at a hotel by... More

I went in May so I think the best advice I can give you is to contact the Akumal Dive Shop. They are located right at the location where you'll be snorkeling. And I believe they will be able to answer your concerns.

I didn't pay for a guide. The place is not so big and it's safe to go without a guide
