Beautiful turtles and bay. Lots of tourists.

What a lovely cove! But it gets very busy after 10am. We stayed in the hotel in the middle of the bay and were able to swim out to see the turtles very early. The locals are pretty protective which is nice to see. The don't allow people past a certain point without a life vest. So they will not... More

The only bad part is the aggressive, harassing, intimidating tour operators fraudulently misrepresenting themselves as government officials. I was in Akumal January 8-15, 2017. My wife and I did encounter very aggressive people in the bay, and on the beach. They claimed that life jackets are mandatory and flippers not allowed. Having been in contact with the Ecological Centre before... More

I was visiting Cozumel and wanted to swim with sea turtles, so we took the ferry and colectivo to Akumal Beach. It was the highlight of my trip!!! We got there later in the day, so the water was slightly cloudy from people stirring up sand, but we still saw many turtles (maybe 5-10, and probably some of the same... More

People will stop you while entering the bay trying to sell you guided tours and equipment (about 500 pesos per person). They will tell you about the rules of the bay and will also use a few arguments to obtain a quick payment from you such as: visibilty is great only now, turtles are coming only now close to shore,... I don't understand why anyone has given this place high ratings. It's jam-packed and the reef is completely destroyed. Tragic. I saw a couple of turtles and a few fish, but what a disaster this was. I snorkeled at a reef in a deserted area of the Yucatan (Mahahual) last year and it was incredible. I guess my hopes were... More

3 years make a big difference we were there 3 years ago and just last week November 10th this is the slow season and there are way to many people here and you have the dive shop trying to tell you that you can't use fins or snorkel out of their roped area towards Akumal beach resort that's bull yes... We stayed at Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort, which is located on Akumal Bay. The beach has beautiful white sand and the sea has stunning clear water. There is another hotel on the bay, along with a few restaurants and shops, including 2 dive centres and fishing excursions. Well worth a visit, to either go diving, snorkelling, fishing or... More

The Bay is breathtakingly beautiful and obviously Mexico residents are proud of this wonderful area. Respect the wildlife in it and leave no rubbish behind. Don't wear fins in the area Turtles feed and don't touch anything underwater. Tread lightly people....hopefully the Bay will stay as it is for years to come.

We had read lots of reviews regarding the hard sell of the tour guides and arrived with absolutely no intention of using one! You can swim without a guide past the red flag (in front of secrets hotel) and you can swim in the municipal area as you first enter the beach. The guides and signs will tell you that... More

Visited this gem of a bay,as partbof a two stop tour. Firstly descending into two cenotes then had a snorkel tour to the reef and sea grass beds. Saw sting ray and shark on the reef then the famius turtles grazing on the sea grass. Seeing them in their natural habitat is a special experience. All of the staff encourage... More
