The Tulum beach area seemed like a huge hassle to me because when we drove to the gates of Sian Kaan Park, you had to drive through a huge and lengthy traffic jam. Also, that area had plenty of restaurants etc, but no real local hub I could see, and the places I saw were very touristy- lots of yoga and so on. I felt like I was in California. Akumal also has a traffic mess as you enter through the arch, but it is a 5 minute one instead of a 30 minute one. And it has a touristy but charming center in the Beach town, and a real town over the highway. I bet there are real bits of Tulum too, but I didn't see them. But I do recommend visiting the ruins at Tulum, beautiful, and the beach at the ruins is awesome (closes at 4pm)
