Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens. The Gardens and Grounds of Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of medieval England and the romance of renaissance Europe. Your experience begins as you make your way through the grounds and the castle breaks into view. The castle gardens and grounds are home to a staggering variety of flora and fauna with wild orchids, formal rose gardens, Canada geese and resident peacock all adding to the charm of such an individual location. Various events take place throughout the year including theatre productions, operatic performances and most famously the Medieval Festival. Castle tours are provided but because the castle operates as an International Study Centre we advise visitors to call in advance to avoid disappointment.

We went to visit the castle. Unfortunately it was closed due to a wedding. So we could only visit the gardens and grounds. They a bit of a surprise to us. Especially the ancient chestnut tress were astonishing. As a whole it was certainly worth the trip.

The Castle is reached down a road that goes past the Old Royal Observatory...it is a wonderful building with a partial moat and bridge across. The inside of the Castle is superb (much of it is used as a University, but you can still get a real feel for it. The grounds are quite stunning, especially the rows of sweet... More

Herstmonceux Castle is stunning and has a neat Canadian connection (note the flag above the castle). In 1993 the Castle was purchased by Drs. Alfred and Isabel Bader and donated to Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, with the intent to establish it as a centre of international education. Queen’s International Study Centre was born.

We visited this Castle grounds and gardens recently while on holiday. We did not take the castle tour as these are generally boring and require standing around for too long, we prefer to wander freely. However we took a picnic and visited the gardens and surrounding woods. It was a sunny day, and all the bluebells were out and giving... More

Stunning castle we spent the afternoon here and was nice and sunny so we really enjoyed walking around the gardens with all the beautiful flowers. It was a shame that we couldn't actually go inside the castle as it was not open to visitors. There is also the science centre on site we also went there and sat in on... More

Thank you for your review and we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to us and the Science Centre. The Castle is open to visitors for daily tours ( subject to availability) which are a small extra charge but really worthwhile. More

Went to the Herstmonceux castle and grounds 22/4/17. We were expecting to walk round a stately home, but you can only take the organised talk and walk which you have to pay extra for. That said it's not exspensive even if you include the science park which is well worth a visit on it's own, great for kids.

Thank you for reviewing your visit last month and your useful comments. We offer castle tours on a regular basis and usually at least once a day depending on schedules. We suggest checking the website to avoid disappointment and are at a small extra charge. The joint tickets to the Science Centre make a great day out as you mention... More

Gorgeous building and grounds. Gardens were beautiful and I can imagine they will be glorious in the summer. Loved the sundials and Zimbabwe sculpture garden

Thank you for your review. The gardens are great particularly in the Spring and Summer as well as into the Autumn. We hope that there is plenty to see throughout the visitor season. We are glad you enjoyed the sculptures too and we have our annual exhibition starting early June. More

For a small fee you can wander around the lovely gardens. If you want to go into the castle you have to book a tour. You need to check times online before you go. There were only 2 tours on the day we went. We were early so got tickets. Later I noticed the afternoon tour was booked up. The... More

Beautiful garden and grounds, well worth a visit on a warm sunny day. Outstanding trees with trunks wider than you would have seen before. Great if you love plants.
