Overview
More
Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. We went here after Charleston and the Monk's House. It is not quite as exciting as the Monk's House but there is a wealth of interesting fabric, wallpaper and artefacts to see. Again photography is allowed and there are knowlegeable volunteers in each room. Particularly...More

The House is very interesting and has gorgeous William Morris designs. The gardens are peaceful and tranquil. Plenty of shady areas in this hot weather. Also the National Trust has thoughtfully provided deckchairs in certain areas. Excellent eating facilities too

We turned up to hear the introduction talk under the archway but wandered on quite quickly as it did go on for a while & was rather slow. Then we went to the house & was welcomed with the exact same talk! There's a painting...More

Good for the family. Take a stroll amongst nature through the mixed grounds - from formal gardens to rural farmland. Standen house stands majestically. Well stocked tea room open to the public

On a sunny/dry day you could spend most of the day there. House is small but beautiful but the grounds are large with walks and ideal for a picnic. Hope that helps 😊
