We made a trip to Nordegg this week (June 6, 2022). We checked online to see what attractions were open. Really confusing as some sites said the mine site was open in 2022 from May to September and others said closed due to Covid. Well it was still closed due to Covid, so if you decide to go don't expect to see this attraction. Same for the Nordegg Museum - closed for the second year for renovations.

I was born in Nordegg and my family left there in 1955 when the mine closed. Today my sister and I made a trip to visit my place of birth. I was very disappointed with it. It is advertised as a National Historic site but very little of the town is still there. Where the main street of the town was is now being replaced with lots that are for sale. The graveyard is in appalling condition. We were unable to take a tour of the collieries & mine site. Last time I was there was 17 yrs ago and was able to go through the museum which is closed for renovations......poor time of the year to be doing renovations during tourist season. I will go back next year but in my opinion very little has been done to preserve this little town as a National Historical Site.

My granddauther stated that this tour was better than any Social Studies class that she could have been in. The staff from the Museum made the tour very informative and worthwhile.

Very interesting tour about the history of Nordegg, lots of the old buildings are still there, I think its amazing how the people use to live and work out there so many years ago.

Alberta history in a "real experience". The tours run twice a day and are worth the time to learn and enjoy some Alberta heritage. the tour is well run by young staff who are enthusiastic and can share their information to multi age groups. this is a family focused tour and can be the start to learning more about the areas interesting history. Very well done by great staff.

Tours of the mine are offered at 10 AM and 2 PM. The cost is $10 a person and $7 for seniors. Tour takes about 2 hrs. Our Guide , Evan, was really good, gave us lots of history. It was very interesting. Would recommend it if you are looking for something to do while camping out in that area.

This must be our fourth visit to Nordegg. The first two times we were camping at nearby Ram Falls Provincial Park and came out to visit the museum and the Brazeau Mine site. The kids love the quaint ice cream store by the Coolest beer place in Northern Alberta as the sign says. We top up gas and replenish supplies here at the Fasgas store.

The museum should be a 45-1.5 hour visit if you got kids who make a beeline to the cafeteria inside. We spend time going over the history and the pictures of those early times and the history of Nordegg. Early settlers were people from Scandinavia who were used to cut trees for early settlements around this area. Then the town started to grow with discovery of Coal in Nordegg by Martin Nordegg who founded the Brazeau Collierie, in Clearwater county. The town is situated in the North Saskatchewan river valley in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.

Some 29 people died underground explosion in 1941, mining was shut down for some weeks and restarted. Another tragedy stuck it in 1950 when fire gutted the wooden briquetting plant which was later made of iron. The town has a population of 2500 at its highest and as diesel replaced fuel in locomotives coal production demand vaned and the mine closed down in the 1950s. Coal vein was not exhausted, a few families continued to live on most moved out... but the town retains its old world charm. It is a Canada National Historic site.

Went on the 2 pm tour and learned a lot of the old mine site, too bad that they demolished quite a few of the buildings as we really would have liked to see it. The tour guide had a lot of interesting things to share and she also told us a bit of the other tour. This tour might be a bit difficult for people that have mobility limitations, though it is not overly hard.
The museum opens July 1st so we will need to visit again.

Tour guide was great! Answered any questions the group had and used some of the extra time to explain the other tour briefly. Not as much walking as we had thought but still a pretty descent sized site.

We drove out to Nordegg on Labour day weekend hoping to tour the town and mine. Needless to say it closed the previous weekend. What tourists site closes the weekend before the last long weekend in summer in Canada? This one. Plan accordingly.
