Had the most relaxing day at Samuel's yesterday. We sat on a picnic rug on the lawn, sampling the excellent wines which are free to taste. The winery building is an amazing old restored barn, with cosy seating inside or tables outside, surrounded by greenery and amazing views. We are from the Yarra Valley and love the chilled feel of this winery. The winemaker Justin shared some great stories of his journey and the origins of the winery, also managing to entertain our 2 teenage boys. The cellar door manager Mike was excellent and we loved his dog Toast who came and relaxed with us! Left with a bottle of Shiraz and sparkling. We will be back again for sure!

Wine Valley Tours takes guests to great wineries, and here is a great winery with very nice wines. My guests are always pleased with the variety, and I myself always keep buying wine from here. The staff asks you where you like to have the wine tastings and is very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. Make sure you save at least one of your McLaren Vale purchases for this stop.
I have been visiting this winery since I started in 2016

Unlike other "famous" wineries of the region Samuels Gorge is un pretentious BUT that is what makes it stand out as probably the best representation of McLaren Vale, its people, wine and history.
Sitting within a fantastic location - the stunning natural Onkaparinga gorge on one side and a full view of the McLaren Vale region on the drive in. The rustic cottage holds artifacts, comfortable seating and historic stories making it a place to stay a while. The gardens are beautiful with seating on the verandah, green grass areas and the stunning view.
We had planned a day touring the area with overseas cruise visitors and selected Samuels Gorge as 1 of 2 tastings for the day. We spent a leisurely 1.5hrs within a rustic tasting room being pleasantly attended to by the two cellar door staff. As well as doing there job they were happy to chat, answer questions - they really added to the whole experience. Our visitors so happy to have met them and the stories they had.
The wine tasting was enjoyed by all and being able to purchase bottles with the tasting cost deducted from the cost was a bonus.
We have been 3 times since 2013 and will certainly try to make it in more often from now on.

Superb wines in a relaxed, picturesque space. The old 1850s building has been maintained to keep its original character. The atmosphere in entering is one of relaxed cheer, from both patrons and staff. We were welcomed warmly and settled into a tasting (no charge to taste!) Whether you liked each wine or not, you cannot fault the quality. We happened to like them all! Just top class reds. Thankfully they post interstate. The staff add to the experience with their friendly, helpful manner and a touch of humour. Sitting around the rustic table, we looked out onto the lush grass and then out over the gorge beyond. Combination; attractive space, welcoming staff and superb wines.

I went there by myself and the team went above and beyond !! They gave me a fantastic list of recommandations, were really helpful and so kind, best crew ever. The place is magical, wines are worth the visit.
If you like wines with character and authenticity, wines having a story to tell, please go visit Samuel Gorge.
If you’re lucky, you’ll even meet Justin the winemaker, always keen to connect with people and share a few stories.
Remarkable.

We were already very happy with the wine, the ambience and the great view, when we were joined by the winemaker. Suffice to say our tasting was more extensive than the tasting menu would suggest. He was really great company, and a true enthusiast for his trade. Hugely informative, and immensely enjoyable.

Great experience! The tasting is for free and there’s a nice variety of good quality wines. We loved the view and the two guys that took turns in explaining the wines. Both very nice and friendly and willing to answer all of our questions.
The only down side is that we were very much looking forward to get some food but unfortunately there’s no kitchen. Could have done some better research from our side..

See a couple of posts saying nice views, so was keen to visit. Got there & they were good but nothing special, Paxton's are better IMO. The wall is too high for seating area, which should be raised or moved. The outdoor seating is very limited. The staff were ok & the inside was.....well untouched. We didn't stay for a drink as no seats & view was just above average. Wouldn't rush back or recommend as a 'must-go' over Red Poles or some others.
Owner is also not very professional as bad mouthed other wineries.
I expect him to reply to this.

We have never bad mouthed other wineries, in fact we have done the opposite, talking up Red Poles and Paxton’s in agreement with you. Your only hope is to tear down small businesses.
You are a liar and a small, sad little man. Your identical so-called “review” on fb, trip advisor and google show this, as do your own words in the history of your tantrum-posts.
You have been speaking with their cellar door manager Mike. Not the owner, and you have put words in my mouth. You will be reported.

Lovely cellar door with great ambience and a beautiful view. Great service and the wines are really good. It would have been good to be able to get a bit of food as well. We would have stayed longer but we were hungry!

This place has changed lots since the last years. We used to love the view, antique ambiance and their shiraz wine, however on our last visit on sat march 22nd, when we took our visitors from ovrseas to this winery we were disappointed as there was a young girl doing the tastings and she was extremely rude and loud to non-caucasian visitors present at their cellar door. We go to wineries all around SA almost on monthly bases to source and buy wine just for fun and this has made a bad memory for us that I do not recommend you bother driving there up the hill to get disrespected.

Hi, just wondering if you allow us to bring a picnic if we come in and buy a couple of bottles of wine to drink on your grassy area?

Hi, sometimes we are able to help, but it’s always best to direct your enquires with the cellar door team on 08 8323 8651, or “cellardoor at gorge com au“ so they can assist. Cheers
