We visited Pobitora Sanctuary as Kazhiranga was likely to be closed from 1st May. We stayed overnight in a resort at sanctuary as the elephant safari starts early morning at 6.30 am. Did the Jeep Safari too. Will highly recommend Elephant Safari-we could sight more than 20 One Horn Rhinos where as in Jeep safari we sighted only one and that too from a far distance. There are 5/6 Elephants in a group with two or three tourists who go deep in to the forest and one can get to see Rhinos from 25 feet distance. Between Kanziranga and Pobitora one should opt for Pobitora because it is smaller in size and density of Rhinos per sq meter basis is much higher and chances of seeing them is much higher. There are resorts and restaurants near by but they are not 4 or 5 star quality.

I, along with my friends and families visited Pobitora wildlife sanctuary during Dec 2019, and it exceeded our expectation. We chose Pobitora as we tried to avoid any sanctuary which is far from Guwahati as we had 6 kids with us. We hired 3 jeeps for our entire group. In one hour short journey, we managed to see almost 9-10 rhinos from different distance/angles. One forest range officer was present during the safari. Pobitora is almost 1.5-2 hr distance from Guwahati depending on the traffic. However travelling this distance is definitely worthy.

There are some local shops as well where you can have lunch/snacks.

One of the best wildlife adventure. We were there on 23rd and 24th dec 2023. Elephant safari was excellent. It starts early in the morning 6.30 and 7
30 . Online Pre Booking recommended . We say roughly 15 rhino with their little ones, wild Buffalo and wild boar. Good experience. Cost is Rs 950 per person. Good quality resorts and hotels available for stay. We stayed at Prashanti Lodge run by Assam Govt Tourism Dept . Spacious room.Average food but Bonfire was the highlight of the trip...Lot of riverside restaurant in and around Pobitora .. Overall great 2 days getaway destination...

It’s a sanctuary created specifically to settle rhinos in a safe place. It’s not a jungle. So, unlike a jungle safari where sighting a big animal is chancey…here, you will certainly see rhinos. But having been to a number of well organised jungle safaris in S.India & W. India, a safari at Pobitora wasn’t as thrilling.

However, It’s indeed a beautiful place and has a lot of water bodies within the sanctuary. The early morning safari was magical..with the fog, rising sun and the stillness of the place. apart from the rhinos..Pobitora has hundreds of migratory birds, wild boar and surprisingly many many cattle.

It had been a dream to see a rhino in its natural habitat, and I could check that off my list. There are over a 100 rhinos in there and they look magnificent. Loved the experience overall.

Organising a safari wasn’t difficult. We booked directly with the forest / tourism dept but your hotel could book this for you as well. The jeeps were old but worked well, and the accompanying armed security personnel (anti-poaching) in the jeeps gives one some sense of safety overall. We did 1 elephant safari as well.

The elephant safari wasn’t very exciting or comfortable. I wouldn’t do that again for a number of reasons (incl the issue of how the animals are treated).

Pobitora is a wildlife sanctuary, situated about 90 minutes away from Guwahati. We had a pleasant drive there yesterday. The roads are narrow but good. After exiting Guwahati, the scenery is quite pleasant and actually reminded me of Kerala.

Apparently one can get to see a lot of rhinos but we got there a bit late and couldn’t go on any of the (jeep/elephant/boat) safaris … which is a good thing in these times I guess :)

We did a short trip to Pobitora and were amazed to spot so many rhinos! (See pic). The government should however improve the road to the sanctuary.
The sanctuary has pristine jungle and we took a jeep safari. Went through quite a thick foliage and came across rhinos, deer and lots of cows too!
If you plan to stay overnight, I suggest you stay at Zizini which has a very good kitchen, air-conditioned tents and rooms.

When compared to Kaziranga this is a small national park situated close to Guwahati. Lot of resorts are located close by where you can stay, morning trip is advisable when you can go for elephant safari or in afternoon for Jeep Safari. Since area is small the density of animals are more and change of sighting is more. Overall good place to visit

If one is at Guwahati and there is paucity of time , the opportunity to visit Pobitora Wild life sanctuary should not be missed. The small sanctuary of 38.19 sq Kms is home to 84 one horned indian rhinos which makes it the the place with the highest concentration of rhinos in the world. The sanctuary also is the home to wild buffaloes, wild hogs and water birds both resident and migratory(12000 were counted in Feb 2012). Though much less hyped then Kaziranga, this is an ideal attraction for a day's tour or an for an overnight stay.
A journey of an hour approximately through rustic rural Assam is enjoyable and river Brahmaputra runs parallel to the road at stretches, in case one decides to travel via Chandrapur. The other entry is through the road via Sonapur which is not recommended due to poor road condition.
There are only a few resorts around. Assam tourism has one called Prasanti. The othe Kunki"s resort is just adjacent to the sanctuary and has facilities for freshening up.Snacks and meals are available. The staff members are very helpful and will arrange permit to visit the sanctuary as well as permit for jeep or elephant safari lasting for an hour. On request, the resort arranges Bihu performances by local village cultural groups and magic shows( Mayong village, which is very near had been known to be a centre of black magic). There also a small forest guest house but those with proper connections in right places are welcome.
The permit to enter the park is easy to obtain so also the permit for jeep or elephant safari . The safaris are timed early in the morning or in the afternoon. One has to walk across a small hanging bridge over a laketeeming with fishes, to enter the elephant riding point. The terrain is flat , partly forested and rest grassland. Animal sighting is assured . The rhino population is so heavy that very often rhinos can be spotted even from the public road that partly encircles the park . At the end one is happy to have seen these endangered animals from such close range.
One will be back at Guwahati by evening for dinner after a hasslefree day trip or else if one decides to stay back overnight, the nights are very quiet and the early morning safari is just enchanting.

If you are a foreigner, especially travelling alone or in a pair, don't bother going here. You will end up paying 10 times the fare that the Indians pay. The whole affair, including a taxi to get here, will cost you over $30 USD, which is a ridiculous amount for India and for such a small park. If you can manage to get on an elephant safari, it may be worth it if you have never been on an elephant, but forget about the jeep rides - they don't get close to the rhinos and are a waste of your money. The staff is unhelpful and rude. The entire park seems to be an operation to suck money out of a naive westerner. Not a foreinger-friendly place.
