I did the HUNT FOR ARCTIC ADVENTURE and it was worth EVERY penny (or cent in my case). We got to experience a little bit of Spitsbergen and life as it is and was back in the days. This was one of the BEST company I travelled with! The guides were very experienced, patiently and last but not least....NICE and FUN to be around! I spend 7 days with these awesome guides! They did not hurry the group, gave us time to take in all that Spitsbergen has to offer! Because of not rushing we got to see the reindeer, walrus, whales, polar bears, jellyfish, puffins next to all the beauty of the mountains, glaciers, tundra.....In 1 word.....WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend this travel agency!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for a trip of a life time

I am in awe of the stellar team at Grumant Arctic Travel Company (GATC), and I do not say this lightly. My review is organised by location, I hope you find this useful when choosing your tour on Spitsbergen. 3 Day Pyramiden ‘ghost town’ tour by RIB As recommended by GATC, we arrived in Longyearbyen a couple of days prior to the start of our trip. I strongly recommend doing the same, to get somehow acclimated to the ‘midnight sun’ (in summer). If you spend more time on the island it is best to first get acquainted to the largest settlement. It made for a starker contrast when we got to Pyramiden. On the day of our tour, we were picked up by Julia and Valentin, and driven to the guesthouse Russkiy Dom. From the get-go, they were both extremely welcoming and informative, putting our mind at ease about the upcoming 3hr RIB trip through a very clear safety briefing. We did not stay at the Guesthouse on this occasion, but the space looked super cosy and in a quiet area of Longyearbyen. If you are reading this review, you probably know (or are about to look into) all the rich history of Pyramiden as a socialist utopia, built to the highest soviet standard. What I’ll focus on instead is the 7* star service of GATC, which seemed all so effortless to their team throughout our visit. The guides We were very lucky to have Igor as our local guide in Pyramiden. He was ridiculously knowledgeable, funny and a seasoned storyteller. Ask him about all the best to do and see in Pyramiden! I am not very sporty, but even I found the 6-hour hike to the glacier on top of Table Mountain so fun and rewarding, in the company of our guides Oleg and Daria. They both have a commending love and respect for nature, as well as skillful knowledge of the Arctic - this made us feel in great hands. Oleg’s genuine excitement about all wildlife was particularly heartwarming to see. Both Oleg and Daria take care of the area around Pyramiden (in their ‘spare time’!) and ensure the routes are safe and appropriate for visitors and locals alike – I recommend chatting to them about all the fantastic work they do to preserve the environment! The hotel After all the activities, we slept like babies in the Pyramiden hotel (despite our room facing the noisy birds outside – which in itself was a Hitchcock-worthy view – we heard nothing!). The rooms were clean and comfortable. The restaurant and bar, like the rest of the city, are a time-machine to the USSR. The décor is spot on, and the Russian music in the background creates a cinematic atmosphere. Coming from an ex-soviet country, the food brought me the comfort of home. Elena, the chef, with help from Nikita, does a flawless job at recreating childhood memories of having all your favorite foods at grandma’s table! Try the honey cake if you have a sweet tooth - it was delicious and the recipe different from any version I’ve tasted before. I must absolutely praise Azamat and Anya’s perfect balance of professionalism coupled with a good-natured, fun personality – such honour meeting them. They introduced us to the traditional 78 shot -this drink was invented in Barentsburg, and the degrees of alcohol match Svaldbard’s latitude..also the colours resemble the Nordic lights. For obvious reasons, this is also nicknamed ‘ See you tomorrow’. As the first person you meet when entering the hotel, Dasha’s bubbly personality and quick-witted comments are a perfect trademark of Pyramiden hospitality. She was a star. Barentsburg overnight stay One of the best decisions we have made during our stay was to spend a night in Barentsburg. Barentsburg is the beating heart of the Russian settlements on Spitsbergen, and you must experience for yourself the life so beautifully developed in such remote part of the world. I will again only focus on the hospitality of the GATC team on site. The guides Dina was the first person we met in Barentsburg, conducting the walking tour. When we arrived, we were part of a multi-national group visiting for a couple hours. With only one hour ‘allocated’ for the tour, Dina managed to break any communication barrier, and conveyed the best summary of the settlement with so much grace, empathy and witty humor. No one left without a smile. Barbara welcomed us at reception with a cheerful welcome (despite our losing track of time on our previous self-tour). She then led the visit to the Arctic museum. What was supposed to be a 40min visit, turned into 1hr30min of the most well-structured, interesting and educational museum experiences on Svaldbard. Barbara’s passion with the Arctic, and particularly the Pomor peoples, shone through her every word. I was charmed listening to all the ‘heavy’ historical facts she somehow managed to relay in an uncomplicated, captivating way. Food, drinks and accommodation We had a fun beer tasting at Krasnyi Medved (not ‘Red Bear’, as Andrey insisted). Barbara can share with you the history of the name when you visit . As the chef at the main restaurant in the Barentsburg hotel, Andrey prepared some tasty cured meats and picked eggs to go with the novelty beer flavours. The Milk and Raspberry stouts were fantastic! It was moving to see how much work and care goes into maintaining the northernmost craft brewery in the world. Andrey’s enthusiasm for the brewery also came through in the foods he made at the Rijpsburg restaurant (excellent fish pelmeni! You can also try more adventurous things on the menu, like whale steak). We also tried the local canteen for lunch – the food was delicious and homey, in a fairytale-inspired setting, reminding us of Pyramiden. After a rainy day walking around town, our room at Barentsburg hotel provided a very comfortable and warm welcome, with a stunning view across the glaciers. Husky Center One of the most unusual and fun experiences has definitely been the dog sledding on wheels. I have nothing but immeasurable respect for, as the saying goes, ‘work, sweat and tears’ Olga, Seva and Sasha (even if we did not get to meet her, we heard great things about her love and care for the place) put into the Husky Center. The dogs are incredibly well looked-after, clean and groomed despite the muddy weather, and they were all so happy and friendly. The Center itself, which we visited, is operated at the highest professional standard. Dogs are fed expert-quality meals which are prepared based on their individual nutritional needs in the dedicated kitchen. The dedicated area for boarding, grooming and looking after injured pets was cleaner than some human hospitals I have been in. If you visit them, don’t forget to stop for a drink in their bar area – the elegant setting offers a peaceful, stunning view of the ‘beach’. I am very grateful to Olga and Seva not only for their dedication to all the wonderful dogs, but also for their warm and hospitable personality. Once again, we felt very safe during the tour, as well as welcome and engaged. Our hearts were full. We were lucky to meet Diana, who was working at the local kindergarten, and learn about how the community is structured. It was wonderful to see her love and commitment to the few children in the settlement. She recommended we visit the local handicraft center, which you definitely should not miss either for some special, hand-made souvenirs. The overall tour I owe heaps of recognition to Valentin, for his utmost competency, skill, thoughtfulness and altogether professionalism, from the pre-departure process, throughout our stay, and up until departing Svalbard. He surpassed any expectations I could have had about this tour. The communication prior to arriving on the island was very smooth (do listen to GATC’s guidelines on what to pack. Now read that again). As I was the one sole English-only speaking member of our group, he has been fantastic at making sure I understood all directions and that I did not feel left out of any conversation during the entire trip (same goes for the whole GATC team). This was hugely thoughtful and so appreciated. He dedicated a lot of time briefing us in the morning about the upcoming day, and ‘debriefing’ after the trips in the evening. This was extremely valuable for us in feeling like all our needs and questions were thoroughly considered. At the end of the tour, he offered invaluable help with the logistics with our next visit to Barentsburg. Top-notch experience from him and the entire team at GATC! I will not think twice before booking a tour with them on my next visit to Svaldbard.

Another difficult review I need to do. The company continues to be maybe the best in the arctic, well prepared, with excellent guides and a very well prepared team. I did this time the adventure to Pyramidem (canceled on 2020 for COVID) and I did on Apri 8/9 - 2022. The hotel, the food and the family continues being the best. Our guides were Даниил and Дарья on the snowmobile trip. And after in the town we where also with Варвара, she did a perfect tour and was part of our group more than just a guide. She has a very big knowledge about the town and nice stories. Alexandra, the manager operation did a great work for me and my partner adventure and thank you her, we did it. See you the next year team

We did the 3 day Arctic Time Machine tour with Grumant Arctic Travel Company in march 2022. This experience was absolutely outstanding! The Pyramiden destination is in itself a unique destination unlike anything else we have experienced. A model city constructed at the edge of the world, and then abandoned and left as a frozen memory. It simply has to be seen! Visiting Pyramiden with Grumant Arctic Travel Company further added to the great experience. Our guides picked us up on time at our hotel in Longyearbyen, and started with a good explanation of the route, safety on the tour and what we were going to see on the way. The company is well organized with everything neat and ready to go at their base of operation in Longyearbyen. Equipment was clean, in good condition and kept us warm and comfortable during the entire tour. The long snowmobile tour to Pyramiden was done with several stops and explanations of the areas, including a tasty russian lunch at a frozen lake in the wilderness. At Pyramiden our guides showed us through several of the buildings and the area with great insight and knowledge of the town. The hotel at Pyramiden is quirky and comfortable. What truly stands out is the friendliness of the staff and the restaurant. The food was amazing, homecooked russian dishes. Having the guides join us for dinner further added to the atmosphere. A special thanks to our guides, Andrey, Oleg, Dasha and Dani. They were knowledgeable, friendly, accomodating to our wishes and always able to add further insights to the place.

We booked 3-days tour to Barentsburg with Grumant team in April 2021. Here is our experience: 1. Pre-booking communication: Excellent, they answered all of our questions within hours, gave us all of the information needed. Best communication I have ever experienced. 2. Tour itself: we got a good instructions about scooter driving, and the adventure begun. Guides were very skilled, we felt safe all the time. Helped a lot with scooter tricks, showing how to turn, how to drive uphill etc. Guides were very helpful all the time, there were many stops, each one was followed by some interesting story about the place. 3. Flow of information during the trip: each day we were given perfect instructions with time of the next event. There are quite many things to do in Barentsburg, so it is not only about the scooter. Guides were eating dinners and lunches with us, providing great atmosphere and even more stories about the place. In general, there is not even a single negative thing, I would find abut the the tour or the company. 100% professionalism!
