About
Set in the beautiful walled gardens of Battle's Almonry, this charity-based, independent and accredited museum is solely run by volunteers. It offers a tantalising glimpse into Battle's rich history - from dinosaurs, the Roman occupation and the Norman invasion to life in the two World Wars. In 2024 the Museum will be open from 29 March to 2 November inclusive.

- The Codnor TravellerCodnor, United Kingdom167 contributionsLovely little museumWe visited this absolutely lovely little museum during our brief excursion to Battle for the Medieval Fayre. Set in what appears to be a slightly extended small cottage, this museum takes you through Battle's rich and varied history, from the days of Roman occupation to roughly the 1940s, through a series of display cabinets packed full of interesting treasures and curios. These are accompanied by very useful boards of information that provide context to the items on display. Naturally, with this being Battle, it has plenty of focus on the Battle of Hastings (which took place in Battle, and NOT in Hastings) and the pièce de résistance in their collection is an axe-head from a Battle Axe that experts have dated to the time of the infamous battle, and which was found on land that is known to have been part of the battle field. To see this axe-head is great, because in its own small way, it was wielded in order to shape the future of the country we now live in. It played its part in making us who we are today. Its a brilliant piece. This lovely museum is free to enter and I believe is run by volunteers. Donations are welcome, and they also have a small shop. I was utterly charmed by this place and would love to return one dayVisited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 28, 2024
- Willing7 contributionsCharming and informative.Very friendly and informative with excellent displays from prehistoric through to the present. Particularly informative was the Roman Bath house exhibits and on the Ironworks there. Of course the Battle of Hastings plats a part but so does rural and village life through the years.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 22, 2024
- Julie E2 contributionsGreat Little Gem in BattleOur first port of call in Battle. A lot of interesting and varied information in a small museum. The staff were all very welcoming and keen to tell us about the exhibits, we really enjoyed our time there. Whilst in the Almonry we were lucky enough to meet the man who constructed/updated the fantastic model of the town and we were given a very informative talk about the 1066 Battle of Hastings. It was nice to sit down in the courtyard and admire the beautifully tended gardens too.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 22, 2024
- Samantha R2 contributionsFascinating museum with superb volunteersThis is a fascinating museum with many rare treasures, the two best treasures were Amanda and Kay, part of the volunteer team who run the museum. Their historical knowledge was incredible and they were happy to take time to talk with us. We were made to feel so welcome and were given time and treated with great kindness. This museum is well worth visiting and only a few minutes walk down the main street from the Abbey and the battlefield. There are also beautiful gardens outside and a lovely spot to sit and rest. Many thanks to Amanda and Kay and all the volunteers who run the museum.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 26, 2024

The ladies taking care of it were lovely and attentive with our kids handing age appropriate quizzes and prices so they both had a great time. The displays are also very informative and well done. - K T2 contributionsA Surprisingly Amazing Museum!Crumbs, looks so small from the outside but absolutely packed with fascinating, rare, some unique, LOCAL(!) finds in cabinets. Really knowledgeable volunteers, happy to help/answer questions. Great information/interpretation boards and museum covers right through from Stone Age to World War 2! And I won't give away the revelation re: Bayeux Tapestry - ask to see the 1930's copy they have!Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 9, 2024

The Museum is very interesting with it's 1066 exhibition including 'Battle of Hastings' axe and Roman finds from Beauport Park.
Free admission. The Almondry gardens were closed for a while because of work being done.

This isn't the biggest museum in the world, but it packs a lot into its relatively small walls. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around and purchased a few gifts at the end. But by far the best thing about the museum were the two members of staff who told us so much about Battle and it's history! I wish I took there names as both ladies were brilliant. Definitely pop in if you are in the area, well worth it!

This is a great little museum with local history explained for the past 1000 years. They have printed copies with explanations of the Bayeux Tapestry ( the French version of the Battle of Hastings) which is fairly unique.
The senior volunteer and the 1st day volunteer were both very friendly and knowledgeable.
There is a lovely garden outside too.

Great local history museum! It’s free and all staff are so friendly! Don’t miss the Anglo-Saxon axe in the museum, it may be the only physical evidence supporting that the battle of Hastings happened around battle, as it’s dated to be 11 century through carbon dating :D

What a wonderful museum, we turned up to visit with a dog which are not allowed in. Well guess what the lovely lady volunteer offered to sit outside with our dog whilst we looked around this gem of a museum. It covers many era's of history and the pride is a Norman Battle Axe Head. A must visit if in Battle.
