The beautiful Georgian house of Belmont, set in formal gardens and parkland, is a completely unspoilt and distinctive example of the work of architect Samuel Wyatt.

The house was bought by General George Harris in 1801 with the prize money from his successful military career in India. Later, in 1815, he was created Lord Harris in recognition of his victory over Tipu Sultan at the battle of Seringapatam. Belmont contains fabulous mementoes of the family's history and travels - paintings, furniture, Indian silverware and one of the finest and most extensive collection of clocks in private hands in the country, assembled by the 5th Lord.

The Gardens at Belmont are full of interest throughout every season. The Kitchen Garden has beautiful Victorian Greenhouses, along with figs, hops, soft fruits and traditional apple and pear varieties. The Walled Garden contains a pond and is adjacent to the Pinetum complete with grotto.

Open Sat for tours at 2.15Pm and 3.15Pm, Sun & BH Mon for tours at 2.15Pm, 3.00Pm and 3.45Pm, tea room open for home-made cakes and cream teas from 1.Oopm at weekends. Wednesday tours are at 11.00Am and 1.00Pm,tearoom open Wednesday for light lunches.

The gardens are modest but very pleasant to walk around, and very tranquil. The house itself is also fairly modest but never-the-less interesting. The house tour was made very interesting by out excellent guide. Of particular interest is the collection of clocks, the best I have seen outside a specialist museum. Overall, it is a nice place to visit.

This was our 3rd visit and we still enjoyed the tour. Had a very good afternoon tea. The clocks are something you don't see everyday. Walked a little around the gardens but could not spend to long as we had a coach to catch

Drove out of our way to visit this house, specifically on a Wednesday, only to find the estate was closed for a filming crew. They should have a sign on the main road informing visitors that it's shut for two weeks. When you are a visitor you don't always have ready access to an Internet connection to check the website.... Hello there, I'm very sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit to Belmont, I understand your frustration at not realising the House was closed for filming although the gardens remain open. The notification that the House would be closed is on the front page of the website, has been for several weeks but unfortunately the "News" section is the only... More

We stumbled across this place by accident while driving around the country lanes in the area. We were just in time for their afternoon tour which cost £8 which includes access to the grounds (grounds only is £5). The tour guide was obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about the house and the Harris family and she gave a delightful tour... More

Visited a few weeks ago and enjoyed it from start to finish. The guided tour around the house was very good. The guide was a delight to listen to and very humorous as she took us around explaining everything about the history of the house and all the clocks and contents inside. Lovely gardens to wander around in afterwards.

We had a WI tour of this fascinating house. The furniture and clock collection is outstanding. We had a very nice chap take us on an interesting tour around the house. (we could have seen the gardens but our group has already seen these gardens and they are defiantly worth a visit) He was very informative and had taken time... More

This house is off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The garden is delightful, bigger than i anticipated, and you can buy freshly picked vegetables in season. The house tour was well worth the entry fee . My friend and i did the house tour and our husbands did the clock tour. We all found the guides informative and... More

Visited with a Probus group. Morning guided tour of the House with a very experienced and knowledgeable guide followed by a pleasant lunch in the Orangery. Afternoon touring the well kept and maintained gardens, a credit to the Head Gardener and his staff. Superb day out
