My girlfriend and I were recommended to this venue by our fabulous B'n'B hostess on a Halloween weekend. Fantastic fireworks and a fun family evening would recommend it to anyone looking for ghoulish frights in a family friendly environment. Good value and well organised with some great volunteers we felt lucky to have 'stumbled' across it.

OMG...this place is absolutely amazing. It's eerie, haunting and just wonderful. I've never been in a castle quite like this one with such an eclectic mix of exhibits and things to see. It's goes from one contrast to another as you explore...from the chilling torture chambers and dungeons, to the cosy café, the hotchpotch of articles crammed into every space... More

If you like "jumble" laid out in various rooms from centuries past then this is the place for you ! The gardens I think would be nice on a warm sunny day !

This is set in beautiful countryside not too far from the cheviots. We came on an autumn day and the castle looked great. It's very odd inside though and has a weird collection of objects in every room. The torture chamber is very cool and the rooms upstairs all have strange themes. One of the main living rooms has a... Visited knowing nothing about the place. It was restored from a virtual ruin by an aristocrat with a background in antiques, and stocked with thousands of random items, some very interesting some rubbish, you need to understand this is not a reconstruction. Enjoyed the visit, amongst the other stuff lie stacks of invitations to the aristocrat himself who is a... More

Great hands on experience, lots of fun, really good family trip, dungeons a must see, who knew there's so many ways to die in medieval times.

Interesting castle, spend a couple of hours here, it's very different to other castles but well worth a visit with lovely gardens and great tea rooms.

Found it hard to believe that this castle was empty and almost in ruins when Sir Humphrey bought it for his wife in 1982. Where on earth did he get all the amazing items which are now on display? Lots to see and the gardens look lovely too. Only complaint we had was that the car park is quite a... More

Looks impressive from the outside, however that's it. A mess of junk in the majority of rooms & stairwells. Overpriced for what you expect from any Castle in the county.

An absolute gem of a castle! Steeped in history and in its origins going back to the Middle Ages (with the section of the building where Edward I. stayed still intact), this castle has been well renovated by its present owner, who took the castle over in a dire state. A large section of the castle can now be viewed,... More
