One of the largest second hand bookshops in the country and it's a great second hand bookshop full stop. Massive selection of books from modern to rarities. Food and drink available in the buffet area and dogs allowed in all areas apart from the food areas. Definitely recommend it, suitable for all the family.

This is the second-hand bookshop people tell you about. It certainly takes you aback when you go in, if only because of its size. It's an old railway station and it keeps something of that feel about it: there is still a station buffet and the building still looks and feels like a station - there's even a model train... More

How often when you are on holiday does it take twice as long to look around somewhere, when you have to take turns standing outside with the dog ?? Not a Barter Books !! Dogs are welcome (apart from in the Buffet) so you can all have a leisurely look around. There is a great choice of books, all at... More

It is amazing. Set in the old Alnwick railway station, it has a huge range of books and CDs, talking books and DVDs. A model train runs overhead all day and a coal fire greets you as you step inside - very welcoming. It serves food and drinks, and I can recommend the cream tea - the scones are huge!... More

Treasure trove of books of all kinds. Lots of places to sit and peruse before you buy. Great for kids, with the train and children's section.

We'd heard great things about this place from friends so we were really keen to check it out whilst in the area. We absolutely loved it! We had some delicious cakes from the buffet car in the beautiful waiting room seating area. What a great setting to enjoy something to eat. We only had cake but the rest of the... More

We always visit Barter Books when in Northumberland. It is a much nicer experience during term time, we visited last week in school holidays at 4.30pm and it was still very busy. Even though it is a huge area it felt too busy. We love the buffet although could only get a table in the area where dogs are allowed... More
