About
Northumberland Zoo is a family-run, not-for-profit zoo based in the heart of the countryside. From tiny Harvest Mice to fluffy big Snow Leopards, there are over 100 different species of Mammals, Birds, Reptiles and Invertebrates to see. Every day, we host a range of different Animal talks, including our Birds of Prey flying display in our Wild Theatre. As members of BIAZA (British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquaria) we have better than average standards in all things Zoo - from our spacious animal enclosures to our conservation and education programmes. We participate in a number of different conservation programmes including the vital work that the Snow Leopard Trust carries out in the wild. We want our animals to be as comfortable as possible, by providing them with enclosures where there are plenty of areas to hide away if they would like a break from visitors, we do not force any of them on-show. We encourage visitors to spend time spotting the animals in their habitats.

Visit here if you’re in the area
I visited here with my wife and 2 year old son, the zoo is kept very clean and tidy and it is a much more relaxed zoo compared to others. The animals are great and of great viewing areas. Their is a great park, tractor museum and plenty walk throughs. Soft play is free when paying admission to the zoo and the food as expected price wise at a location having to make a living to invest in the facilities. Great day out and we like a zoo.
Thank you for taking the time to write a 5 star review for us! We love getting such positive reviews from fellow animal lovers, your continued support ensures that every penny we earn goes straight back into the development of the Zoo, into our conservation and our sustainability projects. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Many thanks, the Northumberland Zoo Team.

    Great zoo!
Had a great time here. The animals all look well cared for and have plenty of space. Particularly loved watching the Capybaras having a play in the pool! Lots of choice at the cafe and for once at a zoo the food was really reasonably priced!
Thank you for your lovely 5 star review Jen! The Capybara are definitely a favourite and don’t they know it. With your continued support we ensure that every penny we earn goes towards ensuring all of our animals have the highest husbandry standards and plenty of enrichment. We look forward to welcoming you back for another tasty lunch soon! Best wishes the Northumberland Zoo Team

    Fantasise day at the zoo
Fantastic day spent at Northumberland Zoo. If you go expecting a zoo like Edinburgh you will be disappointed, however plenty to see and do. We spent almost five hours there and could have spent longer. Snow leopards we’re beautiful and we also loved the fruit bats, lemurs and artic foxes. Children enjoyed the play areas and soft play and enjoyed reading about the animals, with the information provided at each enclosure engaging and easy to digest. Would definitely recommend!
Thank you for your 5 star review! We are so pleased that you had a fun filled 5 hours. We love getting such positive reviews from fellow animal lovers, your continued support ensures that every penny we earn goes straight back into the development of the Zoo, into our conservation and our sustainability projects. One of our other main aims is to educate so we are delighted that your children enjoyed reading about the animals. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Many thanks, the Northumberland Zoo Team.

    Lovely and informative day out
This was a zoo of a manageable size and it was lovely to see families with very small children there. We were impressed with the space and comfort provided for the animals and enjoyed both wandering around ourselves and listening to some of the keeper talks. The snow leopards at lunch were awesome!
Thank you for your 5-star review! Your support ensures that all of our animals receive the highest possible care and enrichment. We have to agree, our Snow Leopards are awesome! We will pass your positive comments on to our keepers too. Many thanks from our Northumberland Zoo Teams and animals

    Fantastic day
We arrived first thing and managed to spend a good 5 hours here, the kids age 9 & 11 yrs wanted to go around again! I was so pleasantly surprised by how many animals were housed here. All the staff were lovely, although we brought our own picnic we were surprised at the choice in the cafe and so pleased to see dairy free ice cream! That’s very unusual so thank you for that. The indoor soft play was great as was the outdoor play area. There is so much outdoor space to explore and the animals were clearly being well cared for. Thank you, what a lovely gem of a place to visit we will definitely be back.
Thank you for your fantastic 5-star review! We love hearing about what are visitors enjoyed when they are here. As we are a not for profit organisation, it is due to your continued support that every penny we earn goes towards ensuring our animals have the highest possible care, husbandry and enrichment. We appreciate your support and will pass on your positive comments to our relevant teams and hope to see you again soon.

    Brilliant day out!
I was there with my children and granddaughter, we all had a fantastic day, there for about 6 hours. Most of the animals were visible and doing things, the snow leopards, otters and bats were particular highlights. The outdoor play area was ideal for my granddaughter while we rested with a cup of tea from the kiosk. A really well thought out place with plenty to see and do. Loved it.
We are delighted that you had a brilliant day out! Thank you so much for your support, it ensures that we can continue to develop our zoo and fund our conservation and our sustainability projects. Hope to see you enjoying another cup of tea soon! Lovely visit to Northumberland Zoo
I visited Northumberland Zoo with my 14 month old who is toddling about so he enjoyed walking around the zoo which is all accessible with a pram, The viewing points for small children or a child sitting in a pram are excellent and we enjoyed looking at various animals. All the enclosures were spacious and clean and looked lovely for the animals. There are plenty picnic areas and a lovely outdoor play area and indoor play area for children. I thought the zoo was a little expensive but everything is these days, I assume with older children you could spend all day here, We stayed for 2 and a half hours and had a lovely time.
Thank you for taking the time to write us a positive review, we appreciate all the feedback that we receive. We are so pleased that you and your toddler had a lovely day! Thank you for your support, every penny that we earn goes straight back into the development of the Zoo, into our conservation and sustainability projects and to ensure that all of our animals have the highest husbandry standards and plenty of enrichment. All best wishes from our Northumberland Zoo Teams.

    A hidden gem.
We visited yesterday, not sure what to expect as the zoo is tucked off the A1, down a narrow lane... It's a hidden gem... We were first greeted by very friendly and informative staff. The range of animals is amazing, from Snow Leopards to Harvest Mice. The staff obviously care deeply for the animals, this is shown by the knowledge they have, the enthusiasm to talk with visitors and to answer their questions. Conservation is high on the priority list at this wonderful hidden gem. We were even able to buy honey locally produced by the staff, and it's delicious, the gift shop is well stocked with souvenirs, my daughter had a wonderful time debating over whether to buy a stuffed lemur or a stuffed Otter! Again the staff were friendly, helpful and kind. We will definitely be returning.
Thank you for your lovely review, we are happy to be your newly discovered gem! We have to agree that our animals and staff are amazing, although we could not do all that we do without the support of happy visitors like yourselves. As a not for profit organisation, every penny we earn ensures that we can continue to develop our Zoo and fund our conservation projects both here in the UK and abroad. Thank you for your continued support, we will pass on your kind comments to our teams. Warm wishes from us all (humans & animals) here at the Zoo!

    A great place to visit.
Lots of animals to wander around and look at spread out over quite a large area. A nice relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff on hand to help and advise. Nice gift shop with some reasonably priced things.

Gorgeous animals and great day out!
Really enjoyed our visit to this lovely zoo. All of the animals seemed happy in their habitats and well cared for. The staff were very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful and genuinely cared for the animals. It's hard to pick out our favourite animals but they have the world's cutest armadillo I'm sure, the otters were beyond adorable, the arctic foxes were sweet as anything and the livingstone fruit bats have to be seen to be believed - small bears in halloween costume is my best description!! We visited with adult children but if we'd visited when they were smaller we would have been delighted with the indoor and (spacious) outdoor play areas. This is a relatively small zoo, but we spent a full day here, with keeper talks and a bird of prey show to watch and plenty to walk round. We re-visited some animals who were evasive first time round and only had one zoo animal (serval) and the guinea pigs (who have the most amazing home) that didn't put in an appearance. We were attracted to this zoo primarily by the snow leopards and were not disappointed (see pictures). We also had our lunch in the cafe which was basic but good value. There's plenty of outdoor seating around the zoo for a picnic as an alternative. To get the most out of a day here, get there early, plan around the keeper/show times and download the app for the most up to date information and timings. Bear in mind some walk through areas are time limited, we did them all without an issue by planning ahead. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our day and if we lived nearby would definitely have annual membership.
Thank you for taking the time to write us such a positive and informative review, we love to hear from fellow animals lovers such as yourselves. So good to hear that you spent a full day enjoying all that we have to offer, your advice of arriving early and planning your day, with the app, around the talks and shows is definitely the best way of getting the most from your visit. You'll just have to move closer, so you can benefit from annual membership :-) We all (animals & humans) thank you for your support!

Fantastic. A pleasant 6 hours was spent here.
From the Fantastic otters to fruit bats, Fantastic time.
The keeper talks are brilliant and the guys really pull out the stops.
The bird of prey flight show was fantastic.
Kestrel, barn owl and the Eagle owl flying over your head.
What I really liked was the Scottish wild cat talk .
The cats came out to show themselves and what beautiful cats they are.
Would come back if I lived closer.
Keepers are brilliant, thanks so much for an excellent day.

Smaller than expected for your typical zoo however it was very clean, well maintained with friendly staff. There is a farm animal area where there is also an outdoor play area next to a mini Tractor Museum. The 2 snow leopard were very sweet and amazing to see. You can walk in with the lemurs and wallabies to see them up close which is great! Takes about 3 hours to go around.

Came here on a holiday to see family so as an annual trip we are likely to come back.

Visited during the school half term holidays and this was our 1st time visit.

The attraction was smaller than we expected for a zoo, and we completed it within a few hours and that included talks.

Overall there were plenty of animals to view and all looked very well looked after and healthy. There was a good focus on conservation and lots of notices/information boards detailing the Zoos work on this. The entrance fee, though a little steep, contributed to this work and the upkeep of the attraction. The lady who provided factual information in the bat house and snow leopards to our son was wonderful- thank you!

Yesterday I visited Northumberland Zoo as I had been gifted a keeper experience as a birthday gift and it was fantastic. The keepers were fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable and taught me more about the animals and their needs. A special thanks to Nick, Calum, Ben, Caz and Hannah for making the day so memorable and enjoyable (sorry if I missed anyone out.)

At the beginning of the experience I met Nick who took me to the farm animal section where we cleaned and tidied the living area for the cows. After cleaning and refreshing the bedding we next went to bring in two of the Shetland ponies from the field into the barns (Crumbs and Toffee). They were such little sweeties and Crumb especially enjoyed being groomed to remove the loose hairs due to shedding - we finished up giving them some treats 'Linseed Lozenges'. Even Izzie the goat enjoyed a couple of these as well. In the farm section I also met Cilla the Alpaca and some of the sweetest donkeys ever.

After the farm animals I met Calum who took me in the feed the two species of Wallabies - They were very chilled out and most of them were lounging about watching to see where we put the food. We also went to feed Tobias the Tapir - He loves his favourite sweet potatoes which I fed him through the bars of his enclose. Calum and I then went into Tobias living quarters and cleaned out his bed - was really impressed with his personal swimming pool.

I then met keeper Ben, whom I helped prepare some food for some of the omnivore animals I was going to meet next. We hid mealworms and bigger worms inside egg boxes as these would be used for enrichment for the animals to work out how to get the tasty treats.

First up was Rosie an armadillo she was super sweet and made short work of finding the treats which I hid around the enclosure before she came out and joined us. Other egg boxes were hidden in Effie's house (A Votsotsa - Madagasca jumping rat). Effie was a really friendly and inquisitive little soul who came right up to us and was eyeing up the keepers shorts as a chew toy before we left her to enjoy her food.

Next to Effie were Harry and Niffler - Two Poteroos, they also had meal worms hidden throughout their enclosure - however the sugar gliders voiced that live with them voiced an alarm at people being there. Behind the scenes I also got to hold some beautiful stick insects. One of the species looked like dried leaves of its body and back, they are truly fascinating how they blend into their environment so well.

The final visit with keeper Ben were the Fruit bats - they're enormous close up and it was an absolutely amazing experience to be in with them and the new baby bats too - They are fantastic animals and very cute and fluffier than I thought they would be. After helping collected to old fruit it was time for a break. Included with the keeper experience is a free drink at the cafe.

Following my refreshments I was collected by Caz and taken to meet the African grey parrots - after preparing them some egg boxes too. However these a mixture of dried seeds rather than mealworms. I was able to enter the enclosure with the Parrots and hid the treat boxes around the area (impaled on branches of the trees . Cas then took me to watch the bird of prey display conducted by Elisabeth, where were watched some beautiful birds, These were a Harris Hawk - Rodger, Bengal Eagle Owl - Pebbles and Asian wood owl -Drax - We were shown then flying and learned all about how their behaviour in the wild would be and how they used their special skills when hunting for food. Following the display Caz returned and I got to meet Drax up close - He was super sweet and closed his eyes while I was stoking his head.

The next keeper I met was Hannah and she took me to see and feed the Meerkats and Otters. First up were the otters. Hannah took me into the room inside the enclosure where the three otters immediately came into (they were within a separate section) which allowed Hannah to close off the exit to stop them going back out into the enclosure. We then collected the bucket of fish pieces that we had brought with us and hid them in a special box of stones. The box was opened and the fish scattered and covered with the stones - The lid of the box, which was sort of a cage like design with spaces between the bars was then secured to the bottom with the stones. We exited the enclosure and the otters were released - they quickly worked out what they had to do and were soon happily munching on their food.

For the meerkats two corrugated cardboard boxes almost like honeycomb structure had been filled with meal worms which we threw into the enclosure. Due the food being inside these boxes the meerkats had to work at getting the meal worms and were very enthusiastic whist doing this.

In each of the case where I helped to feed the animals the food was either hidden or placed in a way that meant it needed to be worked at to get. This is one of the ways how keepers ensure enrichment and encourage the natural foraging natures of these amazing creatures.

Finally it was the end of my experience and I was presented with a certificate to mark my keeper experience. I had some time after my keeper experience to visit other animals at Northumberland Zoo. I totally recommend visiting this wonderful place for a fantastic time, amazing animals and friendly knowledgeable staff. Can't wait until my next visit

My wife had a Zoo Experience with the Capybaras and had an amazing time.

Her guide, Callum, was so friendly and knowledgeable it really enhanced the experience.

After the Capybaras we enjoyed the rest of the zoo which was tremendous value for money.

The Fruit Bats were incredible!

Would recommend a visit to anyone but if you have an interest in a specific animal the Zoo Experience was priceless.

Visited with daughter, son in law and 16 month old granddaughter today. We arrived for the 10am opening and spent 4 hours here. Not too busy today so it was easy to see everything. Very impressed with the habitats for all of the animals. Plenty of places for them to hide, lots if enrichment, plenty of space etc. A great example of how to care for wild animals. ( I work in wildlife rescue) . Viewing windows at toddler height in many of the enclosures. Helpful and friendly staff. We watched a birds of prey demonstration which was very informative. Plenty of picnic areas, toilets, and all the facilities you would need. Reasonably priced Café and gift shop. Highly recommend a visit here.

We didn't know what to expect but we were certainly not disappointed. What a fabulous way to spend over 4 1/2hours looking at the wide range of animals, which are well kept and happy. Very clean and excellent service throughout the visit. The zoo keepers were very knowledgeable and did not mind answering the many questions from our grandson. We would definitely recommend a visit and will return. Thank you and we can't wait to see what's next.
