Come and discover a 1920s house captured in time...Step back in time to the 1920s and find out how a grocer's family lived in this market town. This ordinary semi-detached house, with original interior decorations from 1923, was the home of the Straw family. For 60 years the family threw little away and chose to live without many of the modern comforts we take for granted.Photographs, letters, Victorian furniture and household objects spanning 100 years can still be seen exactly where their owners left them.As the house is rather cosy, it is essential to book a tour in advance - just give us a call to do so!

We went for one of the limited 'packing up' trips at the end of the season. In small groups we were shown around not just the house but the work which is done 'behind the scenes' in closed season. The staff oozed enthusiasm and energy and left one realising so much more of what has to be done to preserve... More

interesting visit led by a guide but we seemed to be at a shift changeover so there was some confusion over who was doing what and whether we would guide ourselves. Nevertheless, it was still a very good experience and the staff were friendly. The rooms are fascinating and give you an excellent view of how life was in the... More

Have been wanting to visit Mr Straw's house for some time and so three of us went together. The house is run and maintained by the National Trust. The house remains as the last owner left it! It is full of history and is a bit like the Victoria & Albert museum but on a smaller scale. There are a... More

Small groups are given a timed slot each to look around this house which is fascinating. Most of the tour is guided by interesting and knowledgeable guides. There is a tearoom too.

Fascinating place. So many familiar items that are no longer in our homes. Great place to reminisce the 'Good old Days'.

Really quirky national trust visit and so interesting. You have to book in advance as individual visits necessary as just a normal family home so space limited. Staff so interesting, knowledgeable and welcoming. Thank you to Betty who is delightful and related to so much she showed us. Lovely cup of tea & coffee before our timed visit. We spent... More

It is hard to think this is how people lived less than 100 years ago. What a revolution in the way we live today. It is well worth a visit.

Worth a visit showing how people lived not so many years ago. I can remember some aspects from my grandparents
