I must confess I’ve never noticed what this statue was, and I’ve walk passed it loads of times. Well it’s well worth taking notice of the statue and the connection Sir Robert Peel had with Tamworth.

We were walking around Tamworth and found the statue of Sir Robert Peel in the Market Place. Sir Robert was born in 1788 and was the MP for Tamworth from 1830-1850 and Prime Minister 1841-1846. There is some information at the base as well. Lovely...More

There are benches to sit on near the statue that allow you to sit and look at it. The statue itself is of Sir Robert Peel who is the man that founded modern policing. He is part of Tamworth's history as he represented Tamworth in...More

Well it's a statue of Sir Robert Peel. It's there and it's very nice as statues go. Chances are you'll miss it if you're looking at the floor of distracted by shop windows. Apparently Sir Robert delivered the Conservative Manifesto from the right hand window...More

It a statue of Sir Robert Peel, a local textile magnate from Fazeley who was MP for the town and established the modern Police Force. It is from his names that we get the slang words 'Bobbies' and 'Peelers' for police officers.

I think Sir Robert Peel is gradually being forgotten by the town. On this visit to the statue I found it unkempt, surrounded by weeds and green from Algae. The surrounding flower beds were empty and rubbish was surrounding it. Such a shame the statue...More
