Best walk we had with best views
Sep. 2021 • Couples
We went here a little off season but still had a phenomenal time. The walk was moderate with a few areas of steps but still no issue. The views were stunning and it was great to be able to talk to a ranger and get all my questions answered. So glad we did thus.

Nice hike great views

Beautiful hike! It branches off to a lot of different trails so you can "choose your own adventure" as far as difficulty goes. We hiked from old man's cave to whispering cave and it was a ~6 mile hike that was moderately strenuous and technical.

Must See Hike

This was a very fun hike, not very strenuous, we took our 7, 8, and 10 year old daughters and they handled it very well.

You may forget you are in Ohio.

Trail head starts at the lower end of the parking lot furthest away from the visitors center. Trail ends at the visitors center. The visitors center has displays of information pertaining to the wildlife, plant life and history of the area. We visited the park on a Thursday afternoon, was not terribly busy. Love the one-way trail system that is in place. Nice easy hike with so many sites. Loved the stone bridges, tunnels and rock formations. Not much rain so everything was pretty dry. Saw a horsetail worm on the trail, crazy looking thing!

Easy walk through this trail. Did not take long at all to get to the cave. Nice waterfall to stop and enjoy.

Definitely don’t miss it

Great walk! Beautiful views the whole way. Not very difficult of a walk at all. I wore my flip flops and had no trouble. If it were a rainy day there could be some slippery areas but it was great. Definitely a must do

Not to be missed, even in Aug when there's hardly any water
Aug. 2021
Everything about Old Mans Cave makes it worth a visit.

The visitors center has some nice exhibits (toddler loved the little pretend caves she could walk through & the fake hiking path upstairs). They have a staff member at the desk upstairs just to answer questions about which trails to take. They've also got bathrooms, a gift shop, and vending machines. Makes both a good jumping off point to start a hike, and a great place to come back to when your thirsty and over-heating lol.

As for the area and trail - the scenery is amazing. In Aug there appears to be very little water in all of Hocking Hills, so waterfalls aren't much to see, but the rock formations, vegetation, and the beautiful stone bridges are still 100% worth checking out.

We took the Grandma Gatewood trail with a not-quite 3 year old. She managed pretty well on her own, but a few spots I felt like she needed closer supervision and/or a hand to hold. Definitely a kid friendly trail though. And the rim trail is more difficult, so Old Mans Cave really has something for everyone to hike.

Great photo ops.

Dry but beautiful

Currently there is no water running, so no waterfalls. It’s still very pretty and the hike is fairly easy. Go bright and early or at dusk to avoid crowds.

Another Must See!
Aug. 2021
Old Man's Cave is another unbelievable sight. Because of the dry spell before we were there, the water wasn't running at any of the parks like we'd hoped, but it's still so amazing to see! It's massive with the upper, middle and lower falls and gorges. There are a lot of stone stairs to climb to some of the areas. We took our 10 and 11 year old Golden's on this one. The amount of steps were a bit much for our 11 year old. Younger dogs we saw there seemed to handle it just fine. We want to go back in the spring when the water levels are higher. So worth the trip!
