What a gem for this community! The displays were top notch and with great variety. They have both permanent and temporary exhibits. Their permanent exhibit of prehistoric artifacts was unbelievable. You can learn so much in just a small space about the Native Americans that inhabited the land hundreds of years before.

Beautiful, large, well kept building with nice displays. Free admission, donation appreciated. The Native American exhibit was terrific, but we found ourselves uninterested in the other exhibits for the most part. Decent little gift shop by the front desk. Totally worth swinging into if you are in the area or have the time to spend.

Three permanent displays. The Art of the Ancients a native American display of Artifact--a must see. Along with the Clarence Holbrook Carter’s collection of painting. As well as The Carl Ackerman Collection with over 10,000 historic photos of the area.

My husband and I visited this museum over the weekend. It is a small museum, but definitely worth a visit. There are two galleries: one downstairs; one upstairs. The downstairs gallery features many paintings. The upstairs gallery also features paintings, but also features the largest collection of arrowheads and other Indian artifacts we have ever come across. It was quite impressive.

We would recommend visiting this museum if you are in the area.

We enjoyed the vast display of ancient Native American artifacts, the plethora of Carl Ackerman's historic photographs, and the paintings of Clarence Holbrook Carter. The building housing the museum is a re purposed bank with the vault serving as a store room. The public facilities are clean and the gift shop is interesting.

Cool art/cultural museum with some local art as well as national. You'll need about an hour. Handicap accessible. Go and enjoy some one of a kind objects!

I recently had the chance to visit Portsmouth, Ohio's Southern Ohio Museum to see the exhibition titled Art 360- Contemporary Art Hatching Across Ohio. This unique body of work includes ostrich eggs, which have been painted by Ohio artists. They are amazing and beautiful and just awe-inspiring. The Southern Ohio Museum also has an impressive, albeit small permanent collection, which includes paintings and a vast number of historic relics such as Native American artifacts, stone-age tools, etc. It was worth the drive to Portsmouth and now that this place is on my radar, I will definitely consider going back for future exhibits and events. The museum also has an arts school and a circus school. Our group was treated to a performing arts event that included Irish dance and acrobatics that was quite nice. I would add that the museum is housed in an historic bank building that is probably the best adaptive re-use of a bank that I've ever seen (and I worked in the banking industry for 30 years!) The old vault is where the museum stores much of its permanent collection of artwork and artifacts.

The Southern Ohio Museum in Portsmouth has a great collection of Native American ("Indian") artifacts upstairs. The collection might be organized and labeled a bit better, but it is extremely well lit and the artifacts themselves (stone tools, copper bracelets, etc) are top quality.

The upstairs also features some rather strange art from a Portsmouth artist whose name I forget. A couple of his pieces were good.

Downstairs, in the main gallery, was miscellaneous art from Portsmouth artists. Some of it was good. I think the downstairs exhibits change constantly so by now it's probably something entirely new.

The museum has nice public bathrooms. The staff was friendly. The tiny gift shop had some nice stuff, including some whimsical animal figures, at prices that seemed high to this cheap Kettering resident.

Take the time to visit this museum, you will not be disappointed. Very informative, quite , quaint and packed with local history. During the summer the will have lots going on as far as drum circle, local musicians , wine tasting , historical lectures and historical movies. They even have a kids program that runs in the summer

The shows change out several times a year, local artists as well as well known artist work can be found here. There is a gallery of Native American Artifacts continuously displayed as well as a gallery of Clarence Carters work.
