About
Haystack Rock is a unique 235 feet monolith that attracts wildlife and tourists alike and is part of the Oregon Coast’s geological history, formed millions of year ago by lava flows that created many of the dramatic capes and headlands along the coast. Haystack Rock is protected under U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a seabird nesting colony and it is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is a State protected Marine Garden. The Rock is home to nesting seabirds in the summer and marine invertebrates all year. Tidepool seekers are beckoned by its wonders every day. The Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) is a stewardship and environmental educational program whose mission is to protect, through education, the intertidal and bird ecology of the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. HRAP offers an extensive interpretive program on the beach during the spring and summer months around low tide.

Came to see the tide pools
We came to see the tide pools. There is a very specific schedule you can find online. Unfortunately most of the area where the tide pools is now an animal sanctuary. It is closed off so that you cannot walk in the middle where the best tide pools are. Haystack rock is still very pretty to see but this is kind of a shame that it has been closed off. I guess Mother Nature should take precedence.

    Beautiful Views
We were visiting Portland and decided to make a drive to the coast. We ended up in Cannon Beach and wanted to see the Haystack Rock. Parking was hard to come by so we ended up parking at Tolovana Beach State Park and it was only a short walk to the Haystack Rock. It was beautiful to see.

    Surreal during negative tide
I loved this place. So awesome . Not all low tides are the same. Ask a ranger about the negative tide so you can see the rock most exposed. Totally gorgeous. They’ll tell you not to step on the rocks and of course, don’t touch the habitat. (Shockingly hard for some folks). Lots of birds nesting on top too. This is a must.

    Bucket list destination
We stopped for the day to explore in and around Cannon Beach with this being our main reason. It truly is mesmerizing. Sunset is the time to be as the mist and sun create such a great moment. It is truly a special place

    Amazing geology!
We could see the tip of the rock from our hotel room…so that was great. Seeing it from the beach is amazing. Watching the sunset from the beach with Haystack rock in your photos is quite something. The rock dominates this part of the coastline…definitely worth visiting.

    Finding parking is difficult
If you are not staying at one of the fancy hotels along the beach, be sure to park your car at the nearest public parking lot since there are virtually no street parking. Google maps will not indicate the parking lot, rather a lookout. Be sure to park at the public parking lot and walk a bit, especially if you are here to catch a sunset.

    It’s a rock
It’s an accessible, millions years old, 235 foot tall rock in the Pacific Ocean! And it’s right at the edge of water on the beautiful Cannon Beach. It’s a bird sanctuary and an environmental wonder. But, forget all that, it’s just an amazing sight to behold. The surf, the sunlight, the long flat beach, the reflections, the crashing waves, the mist and all the different angles make this a beautiful spot for amateur photographers like myself. It’s one of those places, that when you see it in real life, it’s just wow!

    Beautiful Scenery
Beautiful scenery. My wife and I walked the long beaches a couple of hours at a time. The towns of Cannon Beach and Seaside are full of food establishments & pubs. We camped in an RV Park. It was very windy one night with wind gusts up to 72 km / hr. The last week of Sept was a rainy week when we went. There's various hikes and some kayaking that can be done. If you're into the outdoors, this is a visit worth making.

Highly recommend a quick stop, easy walk to the beach to go down to the ocean and look at the huge majestic rock!

I’m from Missouri and I’d never seen the ocean before, and this was so amazing (although the water was cold!) I always thought oceans were like California or Hawaii, but this was so different and I loved it.
