Oregon State Parks is using COVID to make a killing. First off you must make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance to stay. No drive ups allowed. Next you have to pay Reserve America $8 per reservation. Reserve America is raking in the bucks on this. Next is the camp has 260 sites, all full. Lets see, average of $30 per site per night (conservative) and they are pulling down over $7,500 per night. Yet (according to them) they cannot afford to pay enough staff to man the park. All work is done by well identified volunteers. No showers, no amenities, no regular cleaning of the toilets. Very few trees, open common areas that could be park like have the sprinklers come on to dampen the desire to use them. The actual setting itself is nice. The park itself is not. I would probably try a private RV park the next time around.

We stayed during the 2020 Seafood and Wine Festival which was just down the road. We were able to ride our bikes on the paved trail that led to the beach, but turned off to take the wide paved path to South Beach jetty. Rode under the big bridge right into the event near Rogue Brewery! We were in a site where most everyone around us were there as a group who partied hard Fri and Sat nights until 1am. There were dogs that were allowed to run and crap off leash, not just this group but others we saw in our loop. They have many park hosts and a "Marshall" who did nothing to stop the madness! What I don't understand is why the big group of people didn't reserve the group camp site, off on its own without neighbors to bother??? Site was fairly level with enough trees and big picnic table. There is a free dump on your way out or you can use the one on SW Fall Street in Newport, also for free. I don't think we'll go back to this festival so there won't be any need to stay at this park again. The beach is quite a hike, first on a paved trail which then turns into a sandy trail.

It's a perfect park for those with kids. Huge with a lot of campgrounds and picnic areas. If you want privacy, you won't get that in this park area. Bathrooms are centered so plan to walk if you are not fully contained. It's clean with a lot of hosts. A lot of children ride their bikes, roller blades, skateboards etc. through the park and don't watch where they are going to please drive slow. There are usually adults playing instruments, music etc. Great for extroverts.

Leash laws are not enforced in this park. Every day of our stay has been ruined by an unleashed dog and their owner’s intimidation that they can do what they want. All of the encounters have been inside the park, in campsite area, and large dogs. VERY DANGEROUS!

Lots of spaces, fairly close together, but with lots of trees. Heated bathrooms!! Also, special family/handicapped bathroom/shower rooms. Great place for winter camping (we were in van). They also have heated yurts at a reasonable rate. Close to beach and hiway, but very quiet.

As always, this park is clean, well kept, well staffed, and secure.
We loved our 5-night visit. It’s a long walk to the beach, but definitely worth it. We have been to this park 5 or 6 times in the past several years, and we have always enjoyed it here.

We love going to South Beach to camp. The rates are fair and a dumpsite is free on your way out. The location is close to the beach and the sunsets are beautiful! The one negative item are the mosquitoes. We camped in September and they were awful. We packed up and went home. They seem worse in September than any other month so don't forget to bring your spray. We will be back!

This is one of the better state parks on the coast! Well maintained and easily accessible. Nice trails to walk along in many areas. Beautiful scenery and many photo ops! The RV Park and campsite are in an area all their own tucked away which is really nice. It is easy to spend a whole afternoon here just enjoying the beach and the water!

This is a large campground and it was pretty busy for Feb. The spots were average, it was a bit noisy near the playground area.
I enjoyed all the trails you can take to get to the beach. It is the closest campground to Newport that is just a stones throw from the Aquaruim and south jetty and some great birding areas.
It was a fine campground.

Great experience! Nice, quiet campgrounds with convenient bathroom/shower locations. Don’t buy the wood that is sold by the park and the convenience store down the road, it’s soft wood so it burns way too fast. Bought more from grocery outlet and it lasted much longer.

What is the ship anchored at the end of the south jetty doing?
Written October 2, 2018
It's a dredge and barge they pull up the sand, rock and debris from the bottom across the mouth commonly called the (bar) so bigger ships can come across at low tides. They usually do it once a year after the calmer summer tides have left the build up.

In June they were terribbbbble! We actually changed our site away from the "water/trails" as they were so bad.
It's camping though,, and it will fluctuate depending on weather and time of year

Some of the reviewers mention "deluxe" yurts in addition to the basic...I don't see that on the list. I do see that some have electric and some allow pets. Would the electric qualify as "deluxe"?

There are no deluxe yurts at South Beach; all are classified as "rustic". They all include a futon, bunk bed, table and chairs, electrical outlets, lights, and a heater. Outside, the site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and water access. There is a photo of the inside of a yurt on our website at oregonstateparks . org
Deluxe yurts include a private sink and restroom.

We are going camping there for the 4th of July. Will I need noise cancelling headphones for my baby? Do they allow fireworks nearby?
Written June 27, 2017
Fireworks are not firer off around the campground. But people do fire them on the beach. Just park away from the beach.

Can you have fires at South Beach Campground first week of September
Written September 1, 2016
OPRD_SouthBeachMU
Oregon Coast, Oregon
Thank you for the question! Each campsite comes with one fire pit that you may use when camping. However, during times of extreme drought or dry weather, a fire ban may be issued throughout the park and on the beach. We post notices on our website and at our registration booth and hospitality center. Please feel free to contact the park regarding these and any other questions!
