- Page J37 contributionsOur favorite parts? The fishing boats, the sea lions & Local Ocean Seafood RestaurantA trip to Newport would not be complete without a visit to the Historic Bayfront area. Aside from walking up and down this quaint and lively business area, my favorite parts include viewing the fishing boats docked at Bayfront and walking down the dock to see the sea lions. There are always tons of them and I could stand watching them for an hour as they vie for space on the lower docks, bark at one another, and look up at us with the cutest faces. A trip to Newport is also not complete for us without a visit to Local Ocean Seafood Restaurant at Historic Bayfront. Always fresh and delicious... so glad we were able to visit again this time! Delicious!Visited December 2019Written January 7, 2020
- ARBY1229Bend, Oregon28 contributionsgood food, nice view, nice shopsthe Clearwater restaurant was delightful. Great coffee shop and sea lions are always fun. Fun to watch boats come and go, fisherman working on the docks gulls keeping track of everyone.Visited January 2020Written January 7, 2020
- Dan WPortland, Oregon1,988 contributionsBe Sure To Spend Time Here!I've always found this bustling, working seaport with a variety of shops and restaurants to be a perfect way to spend most of a day in Newport. it's still the heart of Newport's fishing industry and always offers interesting insight to that way of life and business. At the same time there is a wide variety of other options for tourists - art galleries, gift shops, Ripley's museum, candy stores and restaurants from inexpensive to high end offering a wide choice of meals. If you're interested in deep sea fishing, or whale watching, this is the place on the Newport Coast to fulfill that desire. There is a neat row of benches from which to view the fishing boats and and plenty of other attractions to make a nice day's stop.Visited November 2020Written November 5, 2020

Very cool experience. Nce to see a fishing harbor in action. Fishing boats coming in and unloading the daily catch. Some to local restaurants, some to a packing plant located right at the docks, even saw locals stopping there to buy fresh fish.
The sea lions put on quite a show as well. A must see.

We stopped at the bay front on our way into Newport. It's a busy area but there's lots of parking. Much of the harbor is commercial with many fishing boats coming in and out (a few sell their catch). There's also quite a few restaurants and some shopping. We found the area very pretty and nice. It was a good place to walk around on a very nice day.

This is a really fun area for people of all ages. There are many restaurants to choose from, a lot of interesting little shops, a nice pier where you overlook the resident Sea Lions and more. Very fun for all.

I know it is a “tourist trap,” but the Historic Bayfront in Newport is just fun. It is a working port where you can watch the fishing boats come it and the seals beg for fish scraps. A people watcher will definitely see a variety of individuals. There are restaurants and pubs as well as tourist attractions like Ripley’s Believe It Or Not that compete for your attention. While we were there this last June a high school metal drum band played a great concert in front of Ripley’s. We walked the length of the Bayfront, ate at Mo’s, shopped a little, took pictures of the bay bridge and just had fun. The Bayfront is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in or around Newport.

Lots of fun little stores, a fishing boat expedition business, cafes and restaurants. Riply's is on this stretch as well. If you can, go during the week and not weekend. It can be very crowded and parking is minimal and will have to park a distance. The marina area has a few places for nice photo ops.

We stay at Embarcadero, which has saunas, hot tub, pool, crab pots, sinks and ice all included. We usually walk toward the stores and restaurants and stop by to listen to the sea lions. The food is always great and the service is even better. Whether we stop in at the Barge Inn, Rogue Brewery, or Local Ocean, the service is always the very best and the food just as equaling.

Spent the afternoon walking the Bayfront area. Lots to see and do. Lots of shops to shop in and places to eat food. Several places to watch seal watch or just watch the boats go in and out of the bay.

Hoping to head out to Oregon next summer (May-September). I'm just curious what the best time of year is to see the sea lions at the docks? I know there's a period of time in which they migrate south, I just want to make sure I go during a time when I'll be more likely to see them. Thanks

Looking for hotel recommendations that’s would be within a block or two of the bay front.

Check the Embarcadero. It's mostly (or perhaps all) condos, but I think they do rent them out to individuals.

There are at least two docks on the north side of the bay (where the sea lions congregate) where you can fish and crab.

I also saw people with fishing gear on the pier. I would sure check the local laws or risk a fine and confiscation of your stuff. Google would be a good start.

What time of day were you there to see the fishing boats come in and watch the fishermen clean the fish? I love fishing boats!

We were there on a Sunday in July, and I think eveything along the bayfront was open, but not everything in the rest of Newport.
