- TravelNKAWildwood, Missouri12 contributionsGreat experienceVery cool experience. Nce to see a fishing harbor in action. Fishing boats coming in and unloading the daily catch. Some to local restaurants, some to a packing plant located right at the docks, even saw locals stopping there to buy fresh fish. The sea lions put on quite a show as well. A must see.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten September 25, 2023
- Elephant LoveLincoln City, Oregon15 contributionsNewport is NEW!!Love that sea lions are allowed to congregate and socialize one with another on the rocks in the bay! Love all the seabirds too. Just love walking around there, have for 20 years and it's always wonderful ~Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten November 26, 2023
- Brandon KFlagstaff, Arizona2,008 contributionsYes, it's touristy - do it anywayGreat area where you can park and walk around to see the sea lions, shops, restaurants, fishing boats, and just enjoy the weather (if it is good). We had a great time with the kids going into toy and candy shops, adults in arts and trinket shops, and even stopped for a coffee. I am sure the prices are tourist level, but go and have some fun and just embrace it.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 19, 2024
- Have Camera, Will TravelSouth Bend, Indiana3,686 contributionsNice area to walk, shop , and eat.We headed into Newport after seeing Yaquina Lighthouse for lunch lunch and some shopping. Parking was a bit of a trick, as it was a Sunday in August, but we managed. We hit every shop that looked interesting, ate at Mo's (awesome chowder), and checked out the sea lions! We all had a great time.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten June 12, 2024
- Travel lover75 contributionsGotta go at least once!Great place to take kids for a couple hours. Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum is cool for the kids! It's $30 a kid for the whole experience without games at the end. Takes about an hour and some change to see most everything. There's a boardwalk for a couple blocks filled with lots of souvenir shops with saltwater taffy, candy, t-shirts, hippy stuff, candles, kites, pet stuff, Mo's, other seafood joints, and a few bars. It's a pleasant place to spend time in Newport by the bay.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 23, 2024
- Darryl LMarana, Arizona448 contributionsNewport's Historic Bayfront is a must see but be patient in the summertime.Needs to be on your list of things to do in Newport. Worst news first: in the summer months, it is super hectic and crowded. You may not be able to find a place to park anywhere close to the action. Don't be discouraged. The walk is flat no matter how far away you have to park. When you walk back to the shops and restaurants, walk on the Bayside of the street. You can enjoy looking at the fishing boats, hundreds of them, sea lions and fish processing factories. Also, be sure to watch to sea lions along the bayfront. Mesmerizing for sure. Lots of fun to see. If you are hungry, be sure to get on a wait list for any of the best restaurants, Mo's, Local Ocean, etc. The summertime wait can be excruciatingly slow.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 8, 2024

This is a bustling, working seaport. There are fishing boats, big and small. You can buy fish right from the boats if it is in season. There are sea lions lazing on the docks waiting for fish parts to eat. There is a bustling seafood processing plants and the restaurants serve fresh fish. Fishermen hang out at the bars. So you really are in the heart of Newport life in that sense.
On the other hand, there is a lot of touristy things - art galleries, kitschy sea themed gift shops, a wax museum, and restaurants from inexpensive to high end trying to cater to the tourist crowd.
If you would like to go deep sea fishing, or on a whale watching boat ride, this is the place on the coast to do that also.
So all in all, I would recommend this place as a very interesting stop on the coast. While in Newport, you might also like to visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium if you have kids, or go down to Nye beach if you want to boutique shop, eat in some very nice restaurants, or take a walk on the beach.

I know it is a “tourist trap,” but the Historic Bayfront in Newport is just fun. It is a working port where you can watch the fishing boats come it and the seals beg for fish scraps. A people watcher will definitely see a variety of individuals. There are restaurants and pubs as well as tourist attractions like Ripley’s Believe It Or Not that compete for your attention. While we were there this last June a high school metal drum band played a great concert in front of Ripley’s. We walked the length of the Bayfront, ate at Mo’s, shopped a little, took pictures of the bay bridge and just had fun. The Bayfront is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in or around Newport.

We stay at Embarcadero, which has saunas, hot tub, pool, crab pots, sinks and ice all included. We usually walk toward the stores and restaurants and stop by to listen to the sea lions. The food is always great and the service is even better. Whether we stop in at the Barge Inn, Rogue Brewery, or Local Ocean, the service is always the very best and the food just as equaling.

A number of good restaurants and shops in the area to enjoy while watching the activities at the harbor. Lots of areas to stop and rest while enjoying the views. Watched the sea lions jockey for positions on the docks and entertain the visitors.

We have been visiting Newport Oregon for almost 50 years and have always enjoyed the historic bay front. We ate there, spent money in the shops and enjoyed the sea lions. Today when we arrived we were met with “pay-to-park.” Had there been parking meters, where we just put our money in and gone on our way, we would have been fine, but the idea of finding a pay station and following the instructions as what to do did not seem like fun. With that said, we drove to Nye Beach and Depoe Bay and spent our money there.

We enjoyed the time we spent here. There are some great restaurants and shops. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and the Wax Works are really fun. Viewing the Sea Lions from the docks was a great experience. This is a great area in Newport.

This is a fun place for the whole family. Watching the Sea lions swim around or just sleeping on the dock. After hanging with the sea lions take a walk and go shopping in one of the many stores, or just have lunch. It is totally a carefree trip.

It seems like they are doing some major changes on the water front. It seems they have taken out or gotten rid of the undersea gardens gift store. This time around my son and I got there late and places were closing or were already closed.

Hoping to head out to Oregon next summer (May-September). I'm just curious what the best time of year is to see the sea lions at the docks? I know there's a period of time in which they migrate south, I just want to make sure I go during a time when I'll be more likely to see them. Thanks

The sea lions are gone during June and July.

Looking for hotel recommendations that’s would be within a block or two of the bay front.

Check the Embarcadero. It's mostly (or perhaps all) condos, but I think they do rent them out to individuals.

Yes, yet it’s crowded with people

Can you fish off the dock or any where without using a boat
Written July 29, 2017
There are at least two docks on the north side of the bay (where the sea lions congregate) where you can fish and crab.

I also saw people with fishing gear on the pier. I would sure check the local laws or risk a fine and confiscation of your stuff. Google would be a good start.

What time of day were you there to see the fishing boats come in and watch the fishermen clean the fish? I love fishing boats!

We were there about 3pm and only seen a few come back

Are the shops open on Sundays in October
Written October 17, 2015
We were there on a Sunday in July, and I think eveything along the bayfront was open, but not everything in the rest of Newport.
