Is closing down
Sep. 2019 • Couples
I found out a week before my trip to Newport that this place was closing down. So I made a point to go see it before it did. The store doesn't have much left in it, and it looks as if maybe they have already taken fish out too? It was free to see the aquarium, but there were only a hand full of fish. It did have a old water, moldy smell to it, the windows were murky, and you could tell it's time was up. Glad we went and crossed it off our list. Also understand why its closing its doors.

Sad

Was hoping that they were getting buttoned up for a much needed remodel but was informed that it appears they are closing permanently due to lease rates and government regulations... I get it but still hope for a remodel or a joint effort with the aquarium/OHSU/NOAA as the possible educational service.

So Sad
Aug. 2019 • Family
This place is just so sad and run down. There should literally be no charge. It should be more like "by donation". Not really sure why it had been running as long as it had. Though the idea of its purpose was right just not executed well.
It smells of wet moisture and possible mold. It is dark, cold and dinghy. The windows aren't very clear to see the little fish still alive down there. I actually feel sad for the little creatures. They do diving shows. I missed it so can't really comment on it.
The gift shop on top didn't have much, the word around was because of them possibly closing their doors.
Who knows😕. I only go cause it is part of the package with Wax works and Riplys, which are both pretty awesome.

Awful!
Mar. 2019
My family ages 49,39,18,22 and 2 felt that this was not worth the money at all, It was very boring hardly any fish life and what was in there looked almost dead. We will not be coming back here ever again :(

Let me preface this by saying that I have wanted to go to an Undersea Garden for around 10 years. Seattle had its own Undersea Gardens 50 years ago, and as a lover of local history, I was intrigued by this unique attraction. With the closing of the one in Victoria several years ago, this was my last chance to see what the Undersea Garden was all about.

From the outside, the building is nothing special, and the price is a little steep ($15 for one attraction, or $25 for the Gardens and two small museums). Upon entering, the turquoise walls take you back to 1966, when the attraction was built. Step down the stairs, and you find yourself 10 feet underwater and stepping into a photo from a 1960s Undersea Gardens brochure.

Rectangular windows line the small downstairs viewing area, providing multiple opportunities to observe stingrays, crabs, starfish, and a variety of fish. All of the critters were extremely active, and I got the opportunity to get up close and personal with a few. The longer I stayed, the more I saw; I would definitely recommend making a few trips around the room.

Also downstairs was a small touch tank and a seating area for watching dive shows. Unfortunately, poor weather caused them to cancel all dive shows, but they did not tear off the amusement tab for the attraction and invited us to return again at no cost with our tickets.

The Undersea Gardens tries to create the illusion that you are immersed in local waters looking at local fish. While you are clearly looking into tanks and not the wild, the species showcased are representative of what you would find in Oregonian waters. No clownfish or seahorses here, but definitely enough variety to be interesting.

The green glow from the tank may give off the look of a 1960s aquarium, and there may not be any colorful fish or sea mammals, but the Undersea Gardens is definitely one-of-a-kind. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent “under the sea,” and look forward to returning to see the dive show. If you are looking for a typical aquarium, this will probably disappoint. However, if you are looking for something quirky, unique, and maybe a little kitschy, chances are you’ll enjoy the Undersea Gardens as much as I did!

Broken down

This facility is so in need of an upgrade! dirty, hard for the handicap to even get down, the tanks needed cleaned horribly! For the price you pay to get in you would think they would find some time to clean up a bit and update it!

This is interesting. Not a super special thing to see, but if you have time to kill it is a fun choice with kids

Some may disagree but I find the undersea gardens to be awesome. Its cool to be able to go down under the water and view the sealife. We spent probably 30 minutes or so before the show just walking around and looking at the different fish. The shows are fun and the presenters have a good sense of humor. The price is a lot cheaper than many other similar attractions in the area.

It's old, it's seedy, it's fun... maybe wear a lifejacket.... you never know. A place where family memories are made from.

Grandkids love it!

Every time we visit Newport, we are 'required' to take the grandkids here. They especially love watching the scuba diver.
