Go during a slack tide as the water flows by too fast and it will carry your crab pot off the bottom. We found going an hour before and after a tide change is the best. There are a lot of people fishing for crabs so I think the legal ones are very hard to find. The ones just below the minimum size get throw back and find their way back into someone else's pot. We used a throwable pot but people use the ring pots as well as the square pots. We used chicken as bait.

Walking along the Newport Bay Street Pier offers you a chance to get up-close and personal with the seals playing on the piers & in the water. The street also has a lot of restaurants and gift shops. I found a few lovely gifts at Loofa Soaps N Creations and their customer service was wonderful.
Parking is free on the street.

If you are interested in buying fresh seafood, head to the docks. We brought a bunch home with us. While they were preparing our seafood, we watched 4 seals right off the dock.

Promise them if they eat all their lunch, they can go see the sea lions. They are big, smelly, boisterous and very funny. Kids of all ages love them.

If you like to crab, this is the place you want to be in Newport. You can either rent the crab rings locally, or bring your own. Bait is available nearby. There are plenty of rock crab, and a lot of Dungeness. There is a cleaning station under the bridge.

Visited the port with the idea of buying something fresh for dinner. The harbor is packed with pleasyre & working boats. This part of Newport has so many neat shops it would be worth the visit even if you didn't like seafood.
We checked the signs at the top of the wharf to see which fishing boats had fish this day. Found same and bought a whole salmon *which they filleted for us. Our hostess prepared it for us & her family who visited to meet us. It just couldn't have been better! FRESH! and in the comfort of her deck surrounded by her gorgeous garden. Even better there were leftovers.

during the summer it's usually packed with people crabbing and is to crowded to have much fun. Also in the summer months it's molting season for the male crabs so there aren't many of them anyways. I do best September to March.

Just east of the historic Bayfront, this area starts about at where the seals "perform" eastward. It's a flat, easy-going stroll with benches, birds, and signs along the way for fresh catches of the day for sale. Off in the distance is the iconic bridge, which is particularly "fetching" at sunset!

We come here pretty often to go crabbing. It's a long stretch of dock open to the public and free. Would like to come down when low tide to catch some gapers but it's too early in the morning for me at 4 am. If you don't have a boat to crab this is the spot. Can be a lot of people.

I don't know about Newport directly, but if you are fishing with a charter company, I know that many of them will arrange to have your fish cleaned, frozen and shipped to your home for a fee. You can also check out South Beach Fish Market in South Beach (which is only 8 miles away) as they do ship frozen fish to certain states. Happy Fishing!
