Book lover heaven
Oct. 2020
The outside is unassuming, and inside is a wonderland of books arranged in numerous different rooms by categories. It was quite overwhelming, and I could have spent all day browsing. There's a rare books section too, that we entered with a special pass and enjoyed a quiet, climate controlled look at some unique historical pieces. It's worth visiting!

More than meets the eye
Aug. 2021
While the outside signage looks a little old and run down, the store is much more attractive on the inside than I guessed. They conveniently break it up into different colored rooms so that you do not get lost so easily. It is also helpful if you visit more than once so that you can remember where you've been. I went twice during a five-day stay and could probably have come every day. I came with family the first time and on my own the second time so that I could take as long as I wanted. No matter what kind of reader you are, the store is so large and extensive that you are bound to find a book or two that you must have.

A Book-Lover's Paradise!
Sep. 2020
Powell's is a book-lover's dream! Make sure to go to the original location on Burnside, as it's a city block of books. The rare and antique books room is by far the most fascinating, but the whole place is full of treasures and fun! Make sure to plan for several hours.

Huge but generic feeling
Jul. 2021
Obviously huge selection. But, the place feels kind of generic- like a slightly less nice HUGE Barnes & Noble. Doesn't have the old timey feel of a bookstore where you can get lost among rows and rows of books. The layout is kind of too airy and spacious. I used to think this was a must visit in Portland but I wouldn't necessarily say so after our most recent visit.

Huge Store, Tremendous Variety
Jul. 2021 • Solo
Nice to see people still read real books. I say that because here in Chicago there aren't any large independent book stores anymore. Every category is here, nothing is spared. A true gem.

Basically a library
Jul. 2021
This is basically the main library branch of a large city, so many books with plenty to offer for everyone.

Nirvana for Book Lovers!
Jul. 2021
If you're a bookstore nerd, this is a must-visit store. Use the store map to plan out your visit or just get lost in the stacks. You'll find gems in every section.

Plan on spending an entire afternoon here. As of July 2021, public restrooms were not available due to Covid restrictions. Also, if you want to buy a t-shirt, know that they run small -- very small, so plan on sizing up a size or two.

A personal plug: if you're going to buy books, buy from indie stores like Powells -- your money goes to support local book stores and won't fund billionaire's frivolous trips into space...

Quite the experience
Jul. 2021 • Couples
Eclectic, interesting book palace in downtown Portland. Overwhelming in the best way. I could have spent hours there, and hundreds of dollars. So many choices. I don’t know if it’s better to go here knowing exactly what you want, or not knowing at all…

Get lost in thousands of volumes from the 1800’s to present day. Was a fun activity for my girl and I to do while visiting portland.

Try the smaller stores if you’re overwhelmed.
Jun. 2021 • Couples
It’s a cool spot and definitely worth a visit. You could spend all day here if you wanted to as it is quite overwhelming. There are some smaller Powell’s books and the outskirts of the city that you could go to if you want to be less overwhelmed.
