The Gerding Theater at the Armory is the home of Portland Center Stage, the city's leading professional theater and one of the top 20 largest regional theater companies in the U.S. PCS's mission is to inspire our community by bringing stories to life in unexpected ways. Founded in 1988, PCS attracts more than 150,000 theatergoers annually with its blend of classical, contemporary and world premiere works, along with its summer playwrights festival, JAW. PCS also offers a variety of education and community programs tailored for patrons of all ages. Located in Portland's Pearl District, the Gerding Theater at the Armory houses two theaters: The U.S. Bank Main Stage and the Ellyn Bye Studio. It was the first building on the National Register of Historic Places - and the first performing arts venue - to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification.

Historical buildings that are also LEED green building certified always intrigue me, and this beautiful theatre didn't disappoint one bit. And the performance of Astoria Part One, adapted and directed brilliantly by artistic director Chris Coleman from Peter Stark's must-read book, was fabulous! Can't wait for part two.

We recently saw Astoria, Part 1, at the Gerding Theater at the Armory. We had to drive an hour and a half, so we got there early. A warm atmosphere and gracious staff greeted us, and we soon had a wonderful bowl of curry soup to warm up with. The armory has been turned into a fantastic place for plays,... More

The Armory is one of my favorite places for watching theater- I really don't think there is a bad seat in the house and the performances are always solid. Plus you have to love the architecture of the building and lobby's interior which always has something fabulous going on upstairs and down.

I have been attending PCS shows at the Gerding Theatre for several years. We attended the new show "Oregon Trail" last evening after having dinner at Henry's. The theatre is a sperb venue - a small theatre downstairs and a larger on on the main floor. Both are excellent.

I've been very pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the shows are at this sweet theater!! The sets and the acting are always great, and the acoustics of the theater are good too!! The tickets are always affordable.

We are always looking for fun plays/musicals to see around PDX, and unfortunately it is rather difficult to catch some good ones without paying a lot of money on a ticket. We've seen a preview of "Little shop of horrors" and had great fun watching it. Seats are very comfortable and given the fact that the Theatre is situated in... More

Having just returned from a week of Broadway shows, I saw the sign for a Streetcar Named Desire while visiting Portland. All that I can say is WOW! I had not expected such a professional company of actors and such a high caliber of theatre on this first time visit to Portland. A standing ovation, from my group to Portland,... More

This is a modern theater beautifully integrated in a historic armory building. The seats are raked from the stage and all sight lines seem very good. There is no center aisle allowing for the best sight lines, but also the longest trip out from your seat to an aisle if you’re in the middle. The lobby and facilities are first... More

We've been coming here for years and have never been disappointed in a performance. This is a small enough theater that every seat seems to have good visibility but we prefer the balcony. Top notch talent, wonderful props and scenery, helpful staff. Nearby restaurants, parking lot, shopping. We do the Sunday mattinee show with lunch/coffee/shops before or after. Very enjoyable!

This was the first time I had been in this building let alone to see a Multi-media event such as the "Overview Effect" in the Portland Center Stage’s intimate Ellyn Bye Studio, great experience.
