I'm inherently skeptical of any place with too many 5 star reviews. It is impossible to please everyone, so I have assume something shady is up. Pedal Bike Tours appeared this way at first, but (1) it was my husband's birthday, (2) we were in Portland for the first time, and (3) didn't have a rental car.. so the Columbia River Gorge bike tour made the most sense as a chance to get some exercise, and see a part of Portland we couldn't easily walk or take a train to.
BEST decision ever. The tour was far and beyond the highlight of our trip! We took the 9am tour on a Sunday and despite being a tad rainy and foggy when we took off, it ended up being an AWESOME day for January. It was just the two of us and our tour guide was Sarah.
The first couple stops were gorgeous scenery. Sarah explained a lot about the area as we made the stunning drive out to the gorge and she definitely knew a lot about the area. She was also easy to talk to and very friendly.
We stopped at, I believe, 5 waterfalls and rode the distance between each one. It was about 10 miles total, and a decent amount of walking/hiking up mountains (Gym shoes are fine, no need for any boots or anything). Despite it being an awesome day in January and fairly crowded out, we had NO issues with cars and I absolutely loved that. Portland people are so much nicer drivers to cyclists than Midwesterners!
My favorite part about the tour was also how balanced it was. Sarah rode about half of the way with us, and hiked about half of the stops with us. It was a perfect balance of having her there for questions and to lead us, but also plenty of time for us to be alone and explore the area ourselves without someone hovering over us.
I also can't say enough about how GORGEous the Gorge is (see what I did there? Ha! Did I just ruin any respect you had for me?) Yeah, yeah, you think.. nature is pretty.. but no. Seriously. This place was incredible. We don't have this shiz in the Midwest. If you live in Oregon, take a moment now and think to yourself how awesome your life is. Plan a hike this weekend in my honor. And I'll stare at a cornfield in your honor. Sigh..
So, seriously.. consider taking this tour. If you aren't from the area, save yourself the hassle of trying to find parking on a busy day and hire these guys to drive you around so you can pedal your little heart out. The rides are not too strenuous (very few hills and the ones they have a just a slow incline) and you only go about 1 or 2 miles at a time between waterfalls.

I took the Columbia Gorge tour, and it was a fabulous afternoon. I'd driven that road before, but it's so much better when you take it on the bike's slower pace--you're really able to appreciate the beauty. Our fearless leader, Daniel, was great with local history and facts and kept us rolling along at a nice pace. I'd highly suggest this for anyone new to the area, or perhaps a small group looking for a way to spend the afternoon in a gorgeous part of the area.

I had a day in Portland after a job interview. Pedal Bike tours was a great way to see the city without having to do any planning or scoping out of cool places. The only tour on offer that day was the Food truck tour, and although that's not my scene, it was a GREAT experience. Saw many neighbourhoods and stopped to hear a little more about the city and its highlights. The guide was friendly (not cheesy or intimidating). The other tour takers were all warm and made for a nice afternoon. The bikes are easy to ride and the pace was perfect. I didn't get the job, but this tour filled my time in Portland with good memories.

Unfortunately, we were very disappointed in this tour. I like to do a bike tour in any new city I visit and this one was by far the worst I've ever been on. The bikes were very nice, the booking process was fine, but it really came down to the tour guide. I think that the people at the shop are already aware that there is a problem with this guide, as someone came out and reprimanded our guide in front of the entire group before we had even left! The reprimand was related to him doing the whole orientation/safety talk before all of the group arrived.
What little information he gave us, he regurgitated in a very bored, robotic way. Even those things were filled with lots of "I think," "or something like that...whatever," or trailing off and saying "um, what else, what else...." He wasn't able to answer most of our questions, but more disappointingly, he didn't seem bothered at all by the fact that he was unable to answer questions.
He constantly rode far ahead of the group, started talking before everyone had arrived at the next stop, and often asked, after a while at a stop, "are we missing someone?" In those cases, we were often missing about 50% of the group (who got held up at a light). At the beginning of the tour he showed us a few hand signals that he said he would use during the tour to indicate direction. He only used the signals about 30% of the time, but would often use the signals to indicate something other than a turn (like pointing to a building), while turning the opposite way. We often stopped at lights and when it turned green he just sat there, seemingly oblivious. A few times, other people in the group just pedaled ahead of him when this happened.
And then there were extras that I had grown accustomed to, like the guide looking for a shady spot to do stops when it's particularly hot, or the guide asking if we'd like him to take a picture at a scenic spot. These things definitely didn't happen.
Our guide's name was Bruce.

Daniel was a really great tour guide. He took us on a scenic bike tour and was super knowledgeable on the history of the city of Portland (which was an awesome bonus)! I hadn't ridden a bike since I was a young girl, so it was nice to get a brief run-down on things to remember when riding a bike in the city. Daniel made sure everyone was doing okay throughout the tour, had great suggestions for food & beer, and was welcoming & kind. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

In preparation for our trip to Portland, we called Pedal Bikes and Todd helped us craft a private tour for our family. He was very helpful on the phone (planning required several calls) and helped us create a custom the tour for the 6 of us. Evan was our tour guide and we had a wonderful time. The bikes were nice and in good shape, Evan was very knowledgeable about the city, friendly and so accommodating. Great guy with a fun and easygoing demeanor. We all had a super time and would definitely recommend Pedal Bikes as well as Evan specifically.

I'm an architect interested in city cycling infrastructure, heritage and urban design. This tour delivered all of the above in spades. On a chilly rainy day I was the only participant. The learning was fun and memorable - on a nice bike. The cycling route was varied and covered a lot of ground in the available time. My guide Sara made me feel safe riding in an unfamiliar city and adapted her delivery to answer my many questions, with knowledge, sensitivety and good humor.
She pointed out to me how drivers and cyclists in Portland are generally mutually respectful and courteous - something I found to be true throughout my week there.

When we found one of the stops on the tour closed for construction I appreciated the extra time we spent to look at the adaptive reuse of the heritage building of the Pacific Northwest College of Art and exploring the student installations there. I enjoyed the warm welcome and cappuccino at the Nossa Espresso Bar and meeting with a coffee roast master for an absorbing behind the scenes look at their creative process.

I would thoroughly recommend this tour to any cyclist interested in cities and their stories.

Pedal Bike Tours is a great place to rent a bike. Domonic was very helpful with fitting me for my bike to ride. He even took the time to show me a map of the different neighborhoods in Portland, where the bike lanes were, and good places to eat. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about biking around Portland. Thanks for your help!

To our surprise, our tour group was just the two of us and our Pedal Bikes guide, Sarah, who was awesome -- a great private tour! We met Sarah in Newburg, since we were staying in the area, rather than leaving from Portland. Typically the ride is 10 miles one way, along gently rolling terrain with very little traffic, and the guide follows you in the car to the wineries and then loads the bike on the car after the last winery. Because it was just two of us and we wanted to ride a little more, we asked Sarah to leave the car at the first winery and ride along with us. These tours aren't difficult and are a leisurely ride on comfortable bikes.

We stopped at three wineries: The Four Graces, Adelsheim (my favorite, though a little pricey) and Bergström. In past experiences, I've found group winery tour operators often choose larger, mediocre quality wineries. That wasn't the case with Pedal Bikes; I liked all three wineries. Because we were doing well on time, we made a final stop at Fire + Flood tasting room in downtown Newburg before wrapping up. They were tasting a few local pinot noirs, which were all nice. All in all, it was a great day!

Sarah did a great job and we really enjoyed her company. In addition, she offered some great tips for Portland restaurants and beer bars. Thanks Sarah!
