Beautiful drive but drive slowly. Very curvy road.

We drive up there to see the fall colors but were to late. It is a nice drive when it is open and very pretty too. Seeing the mountains with snow on them are a treat for anyone... read more

We passed by snow covered mountains, lava fields, miles of trees, hairpin turns, rivers and more. An amazing part of the USA, not to be missed.

From Clear Lake to Sahalie and Koosah Falls/lots of other falls, to the lava flows, to all the access to the SIsters' Wilderness area it's one of the reasons to live in and visit central Oregon. Even great for just a drive for the more sedentary or those with limited mobility - still easy access to some pretty amazing sights!

Although the road is closed by snow pack much of the year, the loop covers a wide variety of scenery and varied terrain. Many of the most stunning sights along the Cascades fall along this road, or are short casts away. A consistent hit with visitors.

Beautiful drive - personally I prefer travelling east bound, ending in Sisters - take it slow, enjoy the twists and turns of the curves, breathing the fresh air, and pondering the vastness of the area.

Great views all the way but beware the narrow road which isn't sufficient for two vehicles to pass in places. We left Sisters early in the morning to travel west and had no problems but it would be a challenging drive in peak season. Road closes for the winter.

If you are around the area you must drive to McKenzie Pass. Beautiful fall colors, snow capped mountains in the background, mile of amazing lava fields and a great observatory at the top.

The road up from the hwy 126 side is very twisty and tight. The observatory at the top is absolutely beautiful on a clear day. This is a must see if you are in the area

If you have the time, make sure this is on your list of things to do! Route 242 starts in Sisters, it is a narrow road with plenty of twists and turns and is closed to vehicles exceeding 35' in length over the McKenzie Pass (from Adler Springs Campground to 3 miles east of Windy Point). This is also a... More

A must-do drive when in the area, although not for the nervous. My preference would be to approach the Dee Wright Observatory from the south west, on highway 126 joining the 242 - doing the circuit clockwise. Route 242 is a difficult and narrow road and in my view is easier to negotiate going uphill. The road down towards Sisters... More
