It is a 3.5 to 4hrs drive if you are leaving from Karimabad so best is to leave early in the morning around 7:00am the road is smooth. The earlier you reach the better as less crowd, nice views, you can see local wild life on the way such as Ibex and Yaks, not to mention you passu cones! Good place to just spend some time and see Pakistan China border.

Unfortunately we went only 20 Km before the Pass as authorities do not let any tourist to visit the Pass, which is very sad and people come from around the word to visit this pass.
Karakoram highway is very good condition and views after Tashkurgan is stunning. I wish we all can visit Kunjerab Pass.

Pakistan and China, the two friendly neighboring countries separated by the highest mountainous range of the world The Karakorum ranges. The only place connecting two countries together over this mountainous range is The Khunjerab Pass, at the height of 16,200 ft. Khunjerab Pass is the point were the Highest Paved international road The Karakorum Highway enters China connecting Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and Gilgit–Baltistan of Pakistan. For those who love the high mountainous region, snow and cold weather this is a place must go. The nearest Pakistani town from Khunjerab is Sust that also act as the immigration and custom post. If you want to enter china Visa/Passport is required from their embassy in Islamabad, a bus service runs between Sust, Pakistan till Kashgar, China through Khunjerab Pass. But if you are not willing to visit china you can just go to the Khunjerab Pass and come back to Pakistan by just paying a nominal fee at the post. The Khunjerab Pass is worth visiting with its scenic beauty, awesome mountain views, the yaks grazing and the orange marmot. Since this place is at such high altitude, after November the crossing might be closed because of heavy snow. But after April, the pass is again open and can be visited at any time. We visited Khunjerab in the month of September 2015, the trip was awesome and we enjoyed it very much. There are no restaurants or shops at the Khunjerab Pass so you have to bring eatables and coffee with you if you want to have a picnic there. You also have to eat lots of Apricot on the way to Khunjerab to overcome the lack of oxygen that you feel at this altitude, it is recommended not to stay for more than 30 min at the pass. Also, wear warm clothes and Jackets to face the cold weather, there. Remember to bring the camera with you so that you can have your photographs with the Chines and Pakistani Security Guards for your collection.

Had to drive a good 3-4 hours from Karimabad to get here. Lots of mountains as you pass through the national park to get to it.
It’s approx 1.5 hours from Sost and the road is good.
The border can get cold so I would take warm clothing, there is a toilet there and the soldiers are friendly if you respect the rules.

I had this unique experience of driving from Karachi till Khunjerab pass in two legs and it's worth it... The roads leading to the pass tempt you to drive high speeds on world s highest paved paths through the gigantic mountains and water flowing along... The visit to world s highest ATM at 16200 feet ASL just few meters away from China border makes u feel proud..
One must sure give it an attempt ...
I am personally available to guide anyone to reach this milestone....!!!

Khunjerab Pass (elevation 4,693 metres or 15,397 feet) is a high mountain pass in the Karakuram Mountains in a strategic position on the northern border of Pakistan's Gilgit–Baltistan Hunza - Nagar District on the southwest border of the Xinjiang region of China. Its name is derived from Wakhi 'Khun' means Home and 'Jerav' means spring water/water falling.
Sino-Pakistani border crossing
The Khunjerab Pass is the highest paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakuram Highway. The roadway across the pass was completed in 1982, and has superseded the unpaved Mintaka and Kilik Passes as the primary passage across the Karakuram Range.
On the Pakistani side, the pass is 42 km (26 mi) from the National Park station and checkpoint in Dih, 75 km (47 mi) from the customs and immigration post in Sost, 270 km (170 mi) from Gilgit, and 870 km (540 mi) from Islamabad.
On the Chinese side, the pass is the southwest terminus of China National Highway 314 (G314) and is 130 km (81 mi) from Tashkurgan, 420 km (260 mi) from Kashgar and some 1,890 km (1,170 mi) from Urumqi. The Chinese port of entry is located 3.5 km (2.2 mi) along the road from the pass

Going to khunjrab pad via kkh is a challenge. The atahbad Lake has submerged the road and the road link between hunza and khunjrab had been disconnected. The only option is to cross the lake via boat. There are private boats charging usually $2 for a one way trip. If you are desirous of taking your car across the lake it can cost as high as $200. Best is to have and advance reservation on boat if you want your car across. This way toy can save half the amount. Wear warm clothes. Travel between May to September only

Just getting to Khunjerab pass is a noteworthy feat. From Pakistan it is an epic adventure of third-world travel. From China is a more assured journey but still something not many undertake. It is a long, lonely drive along a finger of the Karakoram Highway, best staged from the Tajik-Chinese town of Tashkurgan. The drive south requires Chinese Army permits and passes borders of Kazakhstan, Tajikstan and Afghanistan, through nearly empty land with only the occasional goat herd, yurt, or Chinese mining camp. Winding up a long canyon to altitudes around 5,000 meters, you arrive at a low saddle where Chinese and Pakistani military posts face each other a couple hundred meters apart, and you are allowed to walk around in no-man's land and even take a few pictures. There was no commercial traffic when I was there, and you can kind of sense the tension of two countries who would like to have healthy trade, but are hamstrung by immigration, religious and political differences.

Khunjarab by Pass is the highest border between China & Pakistan. This mesmerizing place takes courage & real hard work to its explorers. The magical scenery around while you are on top of the world, it is something that you cannot describe in words. This place worth to be must visited once in a life. The ultimate climax of the trip on the KKH is the Khunjerab Pass, which is at an altitude of 4,733 meters (15,620 feet). It is one of the highest paved road connecting Pakistan Northern area to China western provinces. This place is breath taking, mother of the beauty, mind boggling etc.
