Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway, a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafés, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?

We really enjoyed the trip just before Christmas with a Xmas meal and a glass of bubbly. Unfortunately the weather did not avail us of a scenic journey due to the drizzly weather and mist, but it did not damp our enjoyment.

Fantastic took me back to my childhood. I thought it was very reasonably priced and hope to use the train in the near future.

East Lancs Railway What a great day out! You may not be a train spotter but taking a trip on the East Lancs steam train is a lovely experience. Good for a family day out, or for a romantic couples activity. There are also annual events that take place on the steam train, such as on halloween and the santa... More

Excellent, the station was trimmed to a theme as were the trains and all the goings on. Altogether an excellent day out for young and old just before Christmas. I will go along in the summer I reckon it will be just as good.

We did the Santa Special for the 2nd time with our little boys and my older niece and nephew. We all thoroughly enjoyed our day as the staff were really helpful, the entertainers were great and of course Santa was fab! Seeing first the band and singing carols, then the magician, then a visit from the cheeky elves and finally... More

Was given 2 vouchers for Afternoon Tea, but attempting to contact by phone was impossible. On 3 occasions was kept in a queue for over 45 minutes with no response. suggest the railway improves its call centre. Still unable to get booking. Doubt if will bother to use vouchers

Probably the best working preserved steam railway we have ever visited. It is a real working railway as used by locals to get around.

We visited with our nephew and family on December 10th and what a great day out. Can't believe it's the first time we've visited! The station looked great and the entertainment was brilliant. The elf and Toy solider performer were particularly entertaining- cracking jokes and had the carriage in stitches! The magician spend his time making sure everyone has a... More

We went on the santa special train ride with my 3 yr old. It was his first train ride and he absolutely loved. Incredible value for money as we all got mince pies, sherries and even a Xmas gift from santa! Very kind staff and the journey was amazing as well. Highly recommended especially for young ones.
