It's amazing how large these shelters are, carved into the red sandstone of the Mersey river banks. The ones available for the public to tour are on the south bank of the Mersey in the town centre. The ones on Brinksway and on the north bank of the river are bricked up for safety reasons.

Really interesting place with very happy and friendly staff. Going to go back when they do a more extensive tour of unrestored tunnels.

These air raid shelters, we're not reopened until the 80s, so most of it was as it was during the war, and it is still like that now, see how people lived through the north blitz,

The tunnels are nicely presented and well worth the visit and give an indication of life 75 years ago. The audio guide is excellent.

So we were stuck with nothing to do one weekend and by luck came across the air raid shelters online, we called and asked if we would still make it and they explained we would. Greeted by very nice ladies on arrival who explained everything really well. Took my 5 year old and partners parents. We all found it fascinating... More

Brilliant little museum. Shows all aspects of life below ground during the air raids. You leave feeling so appreciative of what people had to endure during the war

I was very excited to bring my partner down to the shelter, she came up from London and has never been to a museum like this before. On arrival there was three older women chatting and didn't really acknowledge us. We paid and then was told to go in the room where a short movie was. Not one smile or... More

Despite being slightly claustrophobic, this air raid shelter was fascinating. The audio guide that went along with it allowed me to imagine briefly what it must have been like during WWII. Walking through the self-guided underground channels made us marvel at the ingenuity of the community and hearing remembrances of the people who spent nights in the shelters was incredible.... More
