When it was found that a second line was required between Sydney and Junee, there was a problem. A hill, a hill of Pre Cambrian solid rock. To go straight through was impossible and to divert around was impossible. The solution was to spiral round the hill to pass to the other side. On the down line from Sydney you... More

Worth the effort. About 30km from Junee, but if you are keen on extraordinary rail structures this one is a must. Be prepared to travel on the gravel Waterworks road to get a glimpse.

Best viewed north bound. Visit the Junee roundhouse, or lookup a rail fans website. You can walk down from near the level crossing at the top. There are views on you tube as well When looking from the road the middle road is the down line and the bottom and top are the roads toward Sydney. Look up the timetables... More

The gps showed the loop but found no roads leading to it. Another couple found the tunnels by accident but no signs to or at it. Still looking

We found out about this at the Roundhouse Museum so we went to see it for ourselves. The gradient was so steep that extra engines were required to push trains uphill. The rerouting of the line around the hill allowed for the trains to make the climb on their own from 1946. An interesting engineering marvel. Well worth the drive... More

The Bethungra Rail Spiral is an amazing piece of railway engineering that is about 30 kms outside Junee on the road to Cootamundra. When you get to Bethungra find your way to Water Works Road on proceed to view the main southern rail line spiral over the top of iteself. If you are lucky to be there when a long... More

We experienced the spiral during the towns annual Flagship Festival, Junee Rhythm n Rail Festival (second weekend of the month). Celebrating Junees rail heritage, this is the perfect time to visit Junee and see what the town and its people have to offer!

This functioning portion of the railway is visible from the road about 30kms north of Junee however there is no official viewing area, tour or anything else to indicate that it is there. We only knew about it from the Roundhouse Museum and drove out there to kill some time in the morning before other attractions opened but really -... More
