This is a great spot, be sure you dont mind your car getting dirty as this can be a bit of a rough road, not exactly 4wd terrain but in our sedan it was quiet bumpy. Worth it though as the dam is beautiful, great spot for a family picnic, there are loo's but that about all. The local safari groups come down here as the kayaking is wonderful.

My husband and I visited here today for a lovely peaceful picnic with kangaroos and native birds (willie wag tails and magpies) coming right up to our picnic blanket. Apart from a few people canoeing the place was practically deserted!

You are able to walk onto the dam wall and see the fish lift. Such a pretty spot!

This is a large body of water and it is quite full and deep in places. We set off from the carpark and paddled about 5klm up the Shoalhaven river into the gorge. Its spectacular. I was targetting Australian Bass and I trolled the banks however there were no fish hungry to take a lure. I will return in the summer for more fishing.

Decided to drive down to the dam on a recommendation and did we have a good time ! There were wallabies all over the place and although the fish elevator was not in operation it was still worth the drive.

Really Tallowa Dam is just a dam, nothing very exciting to see especially at the end of summer.
I wouldn’t rush there if passing through on your way to Kangaroo Valley.

Nice peaceful spot with resident kangaroos. Watch out for the wildlife on the drive there and watch out too for the huge potholes.

Walk out on the dam to see the Fish Elevator. A local said they spent a bunch of money on an elevator for fish. The idea is fish swim into an elevator box which then lifts the whole shebang to the top of the dam...but it is never operating so don't wait around to see if it works.

The Dam itself is scenic but not especially so. Its a nice drive in good weather if you ignore the roadkill (see below) but once you get there its debatable whether or not this is worth a 40 km round trip from Kangaroo Valley. Its pretty but there are a lot of equally pretty places in the Southern Highlands, in NSW and in Australia generally.

En route we passed two dead wombats and hoped in each case they might still be alive. Roadkill is so commonplace there are signs with a number you can phone for help if the animal is still alive (like WIRES in Sydney). Unfortunately both these wombats had been dead for hours if not days and if you are "into" wildlife its not a great experience. However, these two were in an 80 km zone and its a low traffic country road so its not hard to imagine hitting one at night because they are very dark brown and from live wombats I saw years ago not far from here, they move slowly.

As far as Dams go this is certainly a dam. It’s a little uneventful unless the river is in Flood and the water is going over the spillway. Then this is a must see attraction.

You can get on the dam but then you can't see the dam. The lake is beautiful though. There is a picnic area but does it worth to drive 20km from Kangaroo Valley?
