Excellent huge open camping area. One gets to choose your own site. It is right on the river so great swimming on your doorstep. Take a torch and go for a night time stroll to see the wombats, wallabies and possums. Best time is from 9pm. There are flushing toilets at one end of the camp site, as well as dumpsters for rubbish. And there are a couple of water points, where one can fill tanks etc non drinking water. The site is only 11km from Kangaroo Valley village so it is a popular stop for campers and caravaners.

Great camping spot close to Kangaroo Valley and Coastal Beaches.
Would recommend for first time campers and experienced campers. Wildlife encounters almost guaranteed.
Close to Sydney through one of the most scenic drives you will find in NSW.
Soft ground so no need to jack hammer tent pegs in.
Perfect for young kids, teens, adults. Caravans, tents and swags.
No power, limited 4G. Can get busy at peak times but where else doesn’t on the east coast of Australia.

This park is a delight. It is enormous so there is plenty of room to find a quiet spot. For a free camp, it is well quipped. Toilets, garbage bins, dump point. But best of all is the nature, The camp is in a valley surrounded by verdant hills. A creek runs adjacent which would be excellent for canoeing or swimming. You are likely to receive nocturnal visitors. On the two occasions I have stayed here I have had visits from wombats scratching their back on my tow bar. I also shared my breakfast with a mob of kangaroos grazing nearby. TV reception is adequate. Optus mobile is non-existent. Vodafone has some signal.

Bendeela recreation area is a fantastic free camping area in Kangaroo Valley alongside the Kangaroo River. It is a sprawling family friendly site with 3 sections, and several toilet blocks available. It has beautiful grassed camping areas, (not marked) so just drive in and park next to your tent...or park you motorhome or caravan any where you like, it is suitable for all. The road in is easily accessible to all vehicles. The river is ideal for swimming, canoeing or kayaking as well as fishing, and a mobile canoe hire van often comes by during the summer months. Awesome place to stay and watch out for the many wombats that come out in the late afternoon.

Starry nights, cute wild animals around (wombats, kangaroos and etc) foggy mornings and sunny days. The place is located in the heart of the Kangaroo Valley. It offers great experience for camping, lots of area around to put your tent, river nearby for swimming or kayaking and easy access to anywhere in the valley. Although keep in mind that there are no facilities except bathroom (no showers). But hey it is true camping experience and it is free.

Stayed here over the long weekend. Was very busy, but well managed. Faculties were basic, but kept clean and tidy. Location is next to river so we hired kayaks and spent day paddling up then down stream. Lots of wombats to be seen day and night.

We drove to the Bendeela camping area just to experience the wildlife. It's a pretty simple camping site and a bit too chilly for us at 4 degrees overnight to stay in winter. Truly is the best place to see wild wombats and kangaroos and only a 10km drive from kangaroo valley local pub. The wildlife as used to the locals. My son was taking selfies with the friendly wombats whom weren't worried about humans being around them.

Most people have heard about Kangaroo Valley but few know of the free camp area not far from town. Massive grassed area on the side of the Kangaroo river. Fishing, swimming, canoeing, and much more. Toilets are okay. No showers. Water available. Now the drive down into Kangaroo valley is a little daunting to most. There are three ways to enter - from the west (M5), the south which is from Nowra or the north which is from the Berry township. It is worth every bit of the winding road trip to get there. Go see for yourself you will not be disappointed. Limited mobile phone reception so walk around the park. A fellow asked me how come my phone was working as he saw me on mine. Being me and my warped sense of humour I said to him after pointing out a large timber pole, that you have to stand on that to get reception. Yes you guessed he believed me and did exactly that. Don't, just walk around, cheers and safe travel to all

We spent a few nights camping here with a beautiful view of the river from the front of our camper. My wife was not too enthused by my choice of campsite because she thought someone had used the grass as a toilet just nearby. She didn't realise that the droppings everywhere were wombat poo - not like the human variety at all really.
Yes, by late afternoon the wombats would emerge from their burrows, which were everywhere, and graze on the lush grass of the campground.
The stayed out grazing right through the night and into the early morning hours. We felt the trailer moving one night . . . "did the earth move for you too darling?" No, it was just a wombat scratching his back under our camping trailer.
A drive through surrounding country roads revealed about four echidnas in one afternoon, herds of grey kangaroos in some paddocks and also some near the campground, and lots of birds as well.
Camping was free. Plenty of space for caravans, campers or tents, just pick a spot.

Is there a shop nearby for getting food and drink? Or a bus connection to the local town/village?
Would like to stay here for a week December 8-15

Best way is to drive in to the main St. Camp ground is to far away to walk and no bus services. Best to drive in every few days to get what you need. Keep in mind there is no supermarket just an over priced servo, bakery ect.

Will all the areas be open for free camp over the october long weekend
Written September 27, 2019
Yes, it will be open, in busy periods they open another larger section which has extra toilet block available too. Just remember there are no showers only nice clean flushing toilets. It’s a great place, enjoy.

what kind of fish can be caught in the river?
Written July 20, 2016
There are bass, carp, catfish and eels. All are good to eat, depending on your tastes.

HI Moira,
It depends on your carrier. I am on Virgin Mobile and found I didn't have coverage there. We want to 'unplug' anyway so we didn't mind not having mobile coverage. Also when we drove to the closest shops about 11kms away, there was coverage there if we wanted to check email or FB. However Telstra might have coverage at the campsite - you could check their website or give them a call?
Written March 10, 2016
what is the ph coverage like up there please
Written March 9, 2016
