In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Plenty to see. Even on an extremely hot day, we made it through the gardens. Our favorite spots were the tree houses and the Italian water garden. Enjoyed the organ in the conservatory. Would like to try the night garden and in the spring.

Seeing the changing seasons in these gardens is a treasured experience, even though I'm fortunate enough to live in a particularly attractive part of S.E Pennsylvania. The addition of the meadow walks is a great improvement and a treat for bird watchers. Be warned though,...More

We enjoyed our visit, but based upon other gardens (Atlanta and St. Louis) that we have visited we were a bit disappointed. The gardens had great indoor plants and flowers, but the outside did not seem as lush as other gardens, probably because it was...More

Beautiful Gardens. Be prepared to spend the day. Try and pick a day with nice weather as there is a lot of walking around. The fountains are gorgeous.

If you can get there when there is about an hour or so of daylight, you can visit the conservatory and extensive indoor gardens, then have the evening to enjoy the outdoors and spectacular lights at night.

We went yesterday, about 25 degrees, a little wind that really bit you. Wear layers, hat, and scarf. We stopped indoors when we could and fireplaces when available. Wasn't too terrible. It is winter!
