A 176-year-old town hall preserves Marietta’s history

Marietta's Old Town Hall, built in 1847, now houses a museum that preserves and presents the over three centuries of the area's history. The three and a half story building is situated at the top of a triangle of streets (Market, New Haven, Waterford) that slopes upward from the Susquehanna River. Historical plaques surrounding the hall provide the history of the area and town dating from the 1600s as well as commemorate the contributions of townspeople in restoring the building and establishing the museum. After reading these, the significance of two of the streets, New Haven and Waterford, becomes apparent as these were two towns that combined in 1812 to form Marietta Township. Another plaque described the patriotism of Marietta’s women during the Civil War. The museum contains both archives and artifacts and is maintained by Marietta Restoration Associates who have contributed to restoring the town's large historic district, which fans out from this important center. Street parking was easy to find, and walking through the area is a pleasant journey back in time.
