Excellent combination of a small modern gallery featuring Gilbert Stuart and related paintings, fully renovated and working mills with water wheels, and grounds with gardens and nature walks. You can even rent row boats and go fishing. Lovely place.

Open from mid April thru September for guided tours thru the Birthplace. The Gallery has many original paintings by Gilbert Stuart. Stuart's most famous paintings were of George Washington....the picture of Washington on the One Dollar bill was drawn by Gilbert Stuart. When visiting RI...this is a must see experience.

The Gilbert Stuart museum and birthplace consists of three buildings. There is a small art museum at the visitors center/ gift shop that has about a dozen paintings by Gilbert and Jane Stuart. Docents give tours of the two adjacent gristmills on the property. The smaller mill was in the the basement of the Stuart home and was used to... More

The guided tour here was excellent. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave a great tour for just the two of us. He really gave a good understanding of the man behind all of those famous portraits. It's small and compact in a lovely setting. The little trail through the woods was also delightful. For the cheap admission it was... More

We decided to visit this small museum and mill on a cloudy day and we are glad we did. The museum, while not large, has some great paintings by Gilbert and his daughter, Jane. The managers and young tour women were just terrific. They took the time to show us everything about the old snuff mill (where they ground corn... More

Birthplace of the American portrait painter is full of history and a great spring to fall destination. Gilbert Stuart painted the best likeness of George Washington. A hidden gem with a new gallery with changing exhibits. Jane Stuart's work is on exhibit now into October.

My husband and I rode our bikes from a marina to get to the Museum and it was worth the effort. Our guide, Steve, was excellent. I will never look at a Gilbert Stuart painting in the same way. They do have a few orginal works of Gilbert Stuart and right now they have a few of his youngest daughter's... More

Took the guided tour with David. Tours offered every hour on the hour. $10 adult admission. Learned much about grist mill and snuff mill. Tried the snuff. Made me sneeze and eyes water!! Enjoyed our short stay. The day was gorgeous and the mill setting was so calming and serene!

This place is idyllic, from the fish pond, to the water mill, to the small art gallery. The docent/tour guides are excellent, enthusiastic, and well-informed. Although you learn a lot about Gilbert Stuart, you mainly learn a lot about the lifestyle and customs of the period. An excellent way to spend a morning!

Was up visiting friends recently & checked out the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace & Museum. I wasn't at all familiar with Gilbert Stuart prior to my visit, but after the tour I certainly was.
