Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry...

Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry Hammond, three generations of his descendants, and numerous African-American families like the Henleys, Goodwins, & Wigfalls who worked at the site as slaves and later free men and women. Redcliffe provides a setting for exploring the experiences of the enslaved, as well as the larger institution of slavery and reflects the historical experiences and impact of the white and black families who lived and worked at the site. The extant slave quarters, mansion, and iconic lane of magnolia trees planted in 1860 serve to highlight the plantation's rich and varied history. House Tours are offered Thursday through Monday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. There are no tours available on Tuesday/Wednesday. If school groups are scheduled on a day tours are offered, the 11am tour will not be held. Please contact the park in advance if you are planning on attending an 11 a.m. tour.

The family that owned the plantation kept amazing journals and our tour guide, Elizabeth Laney, has been reading the documentation and brought so many different aspects to our tour. The pine floors and sycamore mantels and doors spoke vividly of the past. Thee house is in excellent repair and the furnishings are from many different generations. Well worth the trip!

We were welcomed as soon as we entered the visitors center. The grounds were beautiful, but reading and hearing about the history of the family was well worth the visit. The Park Ranger's knowledge was second to none. She answered all of our questions and added more.

If you happen to be traveling through Beech Island SC on your way somewhere be sure to stop at the beautiful and historic Redcliffe Plantation State site. They have tours of the main house and you can wander the grounds and gardens at your leisure. Stop in the guest shop and visit the information desk.. This is also a great... More

Perfect way to spend an hour or two. Grounds are beautiful and hearing about the history of the family - well documented thanks to a treasure trove of remaining family papers - helps to bring the history to life. May want to visit on days that aren't reaching 99 degrees given the lack of AC in the house.

Visited here once again, simply lovely plantation. Love the care taken with the buildings and grounds and the old magnolia- lined driveway gives one the idea of how it would have been to drive down and live there....nice visit.

Attended a concert in the Magnolia Trees at Redcliffe Plantation, consisting of students from Aiken, SC schools and local choirs. A very enjoyable presentation. A tour of the grounds and Plantation home was most enjoyable. The local rangers are very helpful and informative.

Our first stop on our trip. We had a great tour with a very knowledgeable ranger. The mansion is nicely kept and makes you think. The property is beautiful. Wish we had a little more time to walk it. Not being from the area it was a little hard to find, better signs would help.

This was never an actual working plantation, however there were slaves who lived there to maintain the house and property. The tour is interesting, the guide is very knowledgeable and loves her job. The grounds are beautiful. The house is surprising in that it is very plain compared to other huge mansions owned by very wealthy people. It's a great... More
