The perpendicular Gothic style and delicate fan tracery ceiling was patterned after King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. The early art nouveau side windows were added after a hurricane in 1885. In keeping with the Unitarian tenet that death is part of the natural order, plants grow wherever they like in the adjoining garden cemetery, which pays homage to the free-flowing plan of Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA, also established by Unitarians. Just inside the Archdale Street entrance to the churchyard is a memorial constructed using bricks from the original church building and dedicated to “…the enslaved workers who made these bricks and helped build our church.” Each year, “…houses of worship across the peninsula welcome …visitors…interested in learning more about the history, culture and faith of the congregations lining (Charleston’s) streets” at an event called “Spirited Brunch” (April 23 in 2023). The Unitarian Church will be serving Thomas Jefferson’s deviled eggs and Abigail Adams’ apple pan dowdy (Abigail Adams was Unitarian and Jefferson held Unitarian beliefs).

Spent the afternoon exploring the Cemetery in hopes of finding the unmarked grave of Anne Ravennel the tragic lover of Edgar Allan Poe who supposedly is buried in this Cemetery and still haunts the grounds. Wec heard the story on a local ghost tour and it was something out of the ordinary. The church is beautiful and has amazing historical Architecture and design. The Cemetery is large and full of crypts and markings all the way back to the 1700's. If your a history buff or interested in ghost stories you should make this one of your must visit destinations.

Lovely grounds. Very tranquil and welcoming. The deep history of this Church is fascinating and it’s definitely worth a stop to see the architecture and the walkable courtyard.

with a great history and low key vibe. The interior is interesting both vis a vis the architecture and the history.

Each time we walked past the narrow entrance on King Street the entrance gates were locked. On the last day of our Charleston visit the gates were open. Glory be! What a pleasant surprise right off the hustle and bustle of King Street. If you have a chance, step inside and breath in the beauty of the garden.

We toured the haunted Unitarian Church Graveyard. This haunted cemetery heart of the historic district is over 200 years old. It has at least 3 haunting souls that many have reported seeing.

We loved waking around the church, as it has a beautiful old cemetery at the back. The two small gates also gives the church some charm.

The day we were there two docents who took the time to show us around the church and grounds. We learned much about the history of the church and Charleston. The graveyard is the most scenic and interesting of all. A nighttime visit courtesy of a ghost tour was very informative.

We turned off of busy King street into a promising alley/path that beckoned us to dismiss our plans and follow the path to a fascinating, peaceful, mysterious graveyard attached to this church. Beautifully unkempt and overgrown, this site just begs you to wander and perhaps sit a while and meditate on those who live here eternally. Many of the headstones are difficult to read due to their age, making them all the more fascinating. A beautiful place to spend some quiet time before you step back into the hubbub of the city.
