Interesting history of the Jewish experience in the South

Oldest continuous active synagogue in the South; very interesting history; somewhat disappointed in the upkeep of the sanctuary. Very interesting docent and very interesting tour

A wonderful tour recounting the long history of Jews in Charleston. They were as fractious and vulnerable as the rest of us but they prospered and live on.

The congregants were very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed an excellent Italian meal Friday night and cholent and great lunch on Saturday. The rabbi spoke about the newly enlarged eruv and how many details fell into place due to special intervention. Shul services were very familiar and much like at home.

What I found very interesting was the role the Jewish people had in the Civil War. I highly recommend... More

Linda was a fantastic tour guide and we learned about the congregation's history, its role in the Jewish life of Charleston and its ongoing contributions.

Photos are not of the Orthodox synagogue. The photos are of the Reform Temple in Charleston. A correction is required. Both synagogues are well worth visiting.

Recommend to visit and see the oldest continuous synagogue in the US. Very nice people to show you around and inform you of the history. Really enjoyed seeing one of the original synagogues.

The free tour offered by this historic synagogue was excellent. It covered the history of Jewish communities in the South, the actual history of the building and the Jewish community in Charleston (including the creation of what is now the Reform branch of Judaism) and the current Jewish community as well. The temple has 4 torahs, including one dating from... More
