This has always been a go to spot for us. It was reasonably priced, and always very clean. Yes, it’s dated, the bedding was old as were the linens, etc., but it was clean. They recently raised their rates, comparable to the better known chains, Hampton Inn, comfort inn, etc. Unfortunately, they cannot keep up with the amenities of these other hotels. Too bad, it was a good value, but not anymore. They’ve also closed the hot tamale restaurant, and a redirecting everyone to the sombrero period, twice the price.

This is just a fun tourist stop! You kids will love it! Stop here for food,gas, and souvenirs. Best of luck!

This was the worst camping experience we've ever had. They assigned us a site that the water was not working and they knew it. When we turned the faucet on, the site turned into a giant mud puddle. No water in the RV and we got covered in mud. We called the office and let them know that we needed to move to another site - said we would move to the adjacent site. The nasty clerk, Christian, said I had to come back to the office to switch sites. Told him that there was no way I was going to drive back as I was covered in mud. He told me I had a bad attitude and said I couldn't move if I didn't go to the office. I told him I was moving and he could have me arrested if he didn't like it. He sent security to the campsite. The security officer was nice and said she would drive me to the office and back, which she did. No apology from the nasty clerk. We spent 2 hours cleaning up all the mud.

Nothing open not sure if it was because out of season or what but very few shops open very disappointed due to we made a special stop there to see the changes

Decided to stop here on our road trip. My dad remembered going here back in the 70’s and wanted to check it out again so we stopped.
Depressing….that’s what comes to mind. I don’t know if it’s just because we came in January and things are closed during certain times of the year, or if it’s always like this. Considering that you see signs advertising this place an eternity away you’d think it would be good. Nothing was open except the gift shop and the attached bar. Even across the street there is a restaurant (Pedro’s hot tamale) that’s supposed to be open 24/7, but it was closed because they are working on it. It’s too bad to see such a place in such disrepair.

Ah yes, the well known Mexican, Mr. Alan Schafer. This gentleman created Pedro as a mascot for South of the Border. Probably acceptable for the sixties when it was built, it was a bit cringey. You will see dozens of billboards advertising this place on your way from either direction. Stop for some culturally dubious photos I guess?

This is a true kitschy tourist spot on a large scale! There wasn’t much going on there the day we went. A lot of stores or attractions were closed. However, we throughly enjoyed our time there. It did make me feel almost like a kid again!!

The pictures of the motor inn are deceiving. I stayed one night with my family and the rooms were disgusting. The springs popped up as soon as we sat on the bed. The rooms had a horrible smell and there were signs everywhere warning people of shady activity.

As advertised, but it was very run down and dirty. I got there early before opening, but from the looks and such, it definitely didn’t look kept up. I’m sure it was great in its prime, but I stopped for gas and left.

Have always wanted to stay overnight here after passing it several times to/from FL. What is not to like? Motel rooms are clean, clean, clean! Each room has its own patio and carport space. Quiet, which is a plus! Dogs are accepted w/no additional charge. Plenty of green space for dogs to walk around, and the area is clean. Restaurant and shops are within walking distance. We felt safe here - no issues whatsoever. Everyone's been friendly. SOB's motel website does not do it justice. Would recommend and would stay here again.

Definitely open Sunday’s. Some shops or restaurants
Open at 7:30.
Most are open by 9, and some are 24 hours.
Their website has the hours of operation for each attraction.

Is this still a viable business? Every time we pass on 95, there are very few cars there and no people. We usually pass by in late spring and early fall. Is there a season?

My guess is you are "out of season".Altho it's not the busiest place in the world it is open. The day I was there it was moderatly busy.
Have they fixed the pedroland ammusment park rides and mini golf yet?

They have a bar on their resort property, there are also several bars within a mile to 2 miles of the hotel.

The kids get so excited about the signs. We are finally planning a stop by this year.

Looking around, it's clear that at one time they had more. There's a dilapidated area with amusement rides for instance, but it looks like the rides haven't operated in a while. The restaurants were mostly closed (in the middle of summer) and those that were open had apathetic help, sticky tables and disgusting restrooms. There is a sort of mini-zoo, but when we found out they were charging $12 we skipped it. You can go up in the sombrero tower, but it's in the middle of a forest so there isn't much to see except the interstate and trees. I hate to burst your bubble of anticipation, but it's not really a very nice place. It clearly was nicer once, but those days have passed.
