My wife and I love nature and this was a really fun experience. We loved seeing all the wildlife such as, alligators, birds, turtles, etc. We wished we could have seen the bobcat and the other feline that the receptionists mentioned. It's really nice that you can drive around and stop wherever you want.

Herons, coots, moorhens, blue winged teal, egrets, white ibis, red-bellied woodpecker, northern harrier, american kestrel, yellow rumped warbler, blue grey gnatcatcher, 5 crocodiles. One of our group got alot of bites on legs but we saw no bugs.

A hidden gem of a place not too far from Savannah. Nice little museum. Fantastic staff. The volunteer on duty was very knowledgeable and obviously passionate about the refuge and people's experience. Brochures provided are excellent. There are hiking trails and a car trail where you can get off and walk to view the wildlife. A good variety of birds.... More

Excellent dioramas and commentary by volunteers in visitor center. Attractive store with lots of entertaining and educational gift selections. Then lots of birds, wet-lands, and alligators to see and photo when taking the 4 mile drive through the refuge

Beautiful blue sky and 77 degree temperature in January led us to choose this beautiful place rather than an art museum. This refuge boasts a great Visitor Center and gift shop (bonus feature - no sales tax) and many hiking trails, but the highlight is a four plus mile drive through the old rice plantation. Drive slowly, roll down the... More

This place is a wonder for history buffs and nature lovers. The stories behind these dikes and the intact cistern were a pleasure to find. Wonderful viewing for ducks, coots, herons, and of course alligstors. We had the luck of seeing a red tailed hawk and a gator with her three babies on her back! It's a nice walk -... More

The Visitors Center is a good place to start - friendly, informative staff and the introductory film shares the interesting history of the place. It must change dramatically with each season, and I look forward to returning.

My brother who lives in the area took me to the wildlife refuge twice and it was wonderful. The first time we went early morning so that I could take photos of the swamp and landscape. The second time we went on a sunny, warm, afternoon the day after Christmas and we saw numerous alligators very unclose. It was a... More

We enjoyed the 4 mile drive, we even got to see 5 alligators and numerous birds. If you go, try to go on a warm sunny day. We drove through 2 times on 2 different days. The second, sunny day, we seen more wildlife.

Being a local, I visit the refuge two or three times a month. The scenery as well as the wildlife, changes with the seasons. I have photographed gators, water birds, birds of prey, wild hogs, deer and recently encountered a bobcat. Some trips yield better returns than others, but I always enjoy the visit!
